Hoovers/vacuum cleaners. I need one, tell me which one?

I have never bought one new, always inherited ones when others upgrade Grin

I have a small house, some hard and some carpeted floors. No stairs. One hairy dog but no allergies.

Small budget but I don't want a false economy iyswim. Must be available online.

What do you think, anyone bought a good one recently?

I love our Dyson, but I know some people have complained that they don't last that long. We've had ours for more than 2 years though, and it's the best one I've ever used. The animal hair attachment especially is fab for getting cat hair out of carpets. I think I'll get another if this one ever breaks.

LittleCheesyPineappleOne · 11/10/2010 17:56

I really disliked our Dyson upright, but am delighted with the Miele Cat and Dog.

suzikettles · 11/10/2010 17:59

We've got this Miele for our fairly small flat.

I balked at the idea of spending more than £100 on a vacuum cleaner, but it was worth every penny. Great for hard floors & carpets, upholstery etc and copes with cat hair no bother at all.

muggglewump · 11/10/2010 18:03

I hate Dysons, I also hate Henrys.
I hate Henrys more though, because they are evil.

I honestly love my Argos value bagless upright, really.

I use the supposedly best ones at work (I'm a cleaner) and hate how heavy the are, and I don't think they pick up any better than my cheapy.

I got the most basic Miele Hoover for £99.00 online at John Lewis, it is very compact and has variable suction , you can turn a dial for different surfaces i.e carpet, rugs, lino, hard floors, upholstery. All the extra attachments are stored beside the hose, really easy to switch when you want to get hairs off sofas etc. (we have cats). It is brilliant & powerful, always had a Henry before, and it is a pleasure to use in comparison. I am not at home, so I can't tell you the name of it, but it is not the cat & dog one. It was on offer, usually it is £140, I think.

I love my Dyson. It is the best hoover I have had and is about 6 years old. It is an upright one.

Tippychoocks · 11/10/2010 18:39

I was pondering the miele but it's such a lot of money! Would your argos cheapy do dog hair etc do you think muggle?

this is the one I got at JL. I understand you not wanting to part with so much money, especially after all the free vacuum cleaners you have been given. I did a lot of looking before I decided on the Miele and it was well worth the £99 I paid for it - and I had heard they have longevity, which my Henry did have, as it lasted 9 years, but I couldn't believe the difference, the Miele is much less hard on my back too.

Tippychoocks · 12/10/2010 07:50

Oo, doesn't that make me sound horrible fiveorangepips! I feel a bit guilty now, having never paid for one then moaning about the cost!

In my defence I have no money at all - final year student and single parent - so a hundred pounds is a lot. But then I spend a lot of time re-doing the same area and hoover daily because I miss so much the first time around so in a way it would be an economy. I just don't have enough money to spend it on something second-rate iyswim?

I recently got a Dyson DO24(?) - with a ball.
It is light and easy to manouvre and has good suction. The hand held bit is a bit odd, but does work. We have mainly wooden floors with some carpeting and tiling. The children find it easy to use too, when we can force them! Wink

It was to replace our 10yr old Dyson DC2 - cylinder - which was much heavier but very good. Following a friends advice, we got it serviced by Dyson about 3-4 yrs ago and it prolonged the life well.

titferbrains · 12/10/2010 09:51

We have a miele and when I went to JL to chat about hoovers, they recommended it as the best brand. Sebo is another good brand but pricey.

Just did a search on the roomba hoover and inadvertently found quite a few grumbles about dysons....

FiveOrangePips · 12/10/2010 10:48

Tippy, it doesn't make you sound horrible at all!!! I really don't like having to spend money on boring things to do with house keeping.

Good luck with your studies too .

When our dyson finally blew up (it had last a long time but had never been very good) we got a henry because my brother swore by his and it was £100 not £200 like a dyson. It is great - picks up so much better than our dyson ever did. ( - my cleaner even wrote me a note thanking me for it).
The dds love it too (although dd1 thinks I should have got Hetty rather than Henry as she is pink with eye lashes Grin)

Tippychoocks · 12/10/2010 13:44

I may search for a miele on offer. I have heard horrors about Dysons so I'd be nervous of spending the money there -basing that on almost no evidence though Grin. I've used Henrys before at work years ago and they seemed OK.

Thanks for the argos tip SLD.

Chances of getting out of Currys with one shoved up my jumper?
