Help ! My washing smells

Any ideas why this might be happening ?
It doesn't smell terrible, but doesn't smell fresh (despite taking it out straight away and using plenty detergent/softener)

Anyone had this problem before ? could it be the machine or am I overfilling it ?

TIA

Check the drain it dains away to-we had problem with ours bakig up so sinkwater ended up in washer yeeuuuugh

What spacehoppa says it happened to us too. I also put the machine on a hot wash using either soda crystals or cup full of bleach once a month and gives it a good clean

Quodlibet · 09/10/2010 11:05

We've got this problem too. Have just opened out the drain at the bottom and it was full of stale water (all over kitchen floor, lovely...)

You can get a washing machine cleaner thing that you run through a wash but tbh this hasn't helped really. Does anyone know if you can put bleach through them? Don't want to ruin my clothes if bleachy water gets stuck in it somewhere...

Chandon · 09/10/2010 17:09

my friendly washingmachine repairman told me it is because we never wash at high temps.

He says an empty machine wash, at 90 degrees ( or highest temp possible)once every month sorts it.

It does.

OR washing regularly at 60. Bacteria only die at 60 or over, so if you do all your laundry at 15, 30 and 40 degrees. It`s the ordinary bacteria in your laundry that cause the smell.

Voila.

Quodlibet - I do a bleach wash and then hottest wash afterwards and its always seemed fine with me.

mousymouse · 09/10/2010 19:10

use less washing detergent. I only use half of what is recommended on the pack and guess what, the clothes come out clean!
plus I wash the bedding and towels at 60 in between, so I get a regular hotter wash.
had this problem as well with dh*s smelly shirts and this really helped.

luciemule · 10/10/2010 14:13

I did a 90 wash last week and mine still smells. It's been smelling since I changed to bio instead of the nio-bio I've always used. when the washer is on though, a god-awful stench comes back up the sink so maybe it's the drain problem after all?

We had this problem and it turned out that the element had gone and it was actually washing in cold water. We didnt notice for ages because I tend to put it on overnight so the washing is always cold when I get it out anyway. It was so expensive to repair we ended up getting a new washing machine:(

luciemule · 12/10/2010 11:10

OMG - that sounds like it could be like mine. Will put a wash on now and check if it's cold when finished.

mousymouse · 12/10/2010 14:22

my mashine rinses cold, so I would not have noticed...

luciemule · 12/10/2010 14:24

oh - I need to brush up on washing machines....now where's that manual???

hisgirlfriday · 13/10/2010 22:22

When the element went and before the new machine arrived, I could do a decent wash by adding a couple of kettles full of boiling water into the drum after adding the clothes and just before switching on. That way they came out OK but if I didnt do this everything came out smelling slightly stale and sweaty. eeew.

ceres · 14/10/2010 07:21

i had this problem - things smelt fine when freshly washed but didn't stay fresh smelling for long.

i particularly noticed it with towels, even though i always wash towels at 60 and also use bio powder/gel.

i changed from using fabric softener to white vinegar as i was trying to reduce the amount of chemicals i use. since using the vinegar i have found that things stay fresh smelling for far longer.

getabloodygrip · 16/10/2010 08:12

Ok, this sounds thick maybe, but how can you tell if your water is up to temperature? Mine is running now, but the door feels cool...

I have done two 90 degree washes this week (assuming they were at 90 degrees!) and have emptied the filter/drain thing. laundry doesn't smell, but the machine stinks.

Also have wiped round the rubber seals.

What else to try? Will pick up the soda crystals today. Anything else?

getabloodygrip · 16/10/2010 08:27

Doesnt the machine smell of vinegar if you use that?
