What's wrong with my Panasonic SD-206 breadmaker?!

My mum gave me her Panasonic a year ago; she'd owned it for years, but only used it infrequently, never with any problem. It worked beautifully for us at first, but in the last couple of months its operformance has been increasingly erratic.

Now, it never seems to mix all the ingredients together properly, resulting in very short (2" high), stumpy loaves with most of the flour still caked round the bottom edges. This happens both on the short and normal-length programmes.

Has the whole machine died a natural death from old age, or should I try and get a replacement spinny bit from Panasonic? I can't afford to buy a new one, but we are very reliant on our home-made bread!

If anyone has any similar experiences, or advice, i'd love to hear from them.

Does the spinny bit still spin if you try to twirl it when it's empty? The replacement spinny bits are expensive.

The spinny bit still goes round fine when empty - tho I don't know how easily it should move; you do have to push it around with your finger, but there isn't 'resistance' as such.

It sounds like it isn't mixing properly which could be a problem with the motor or a problem with the mixing blade in the tin. Turn it on without the tin in place and look at the drive spindle. Is it turning properly? Now repeat with the tin in place. Does the mixing blade turn properly?

If the spindle turns but the mixing blade doesn't then you need a new blade. If the spindle doesn't turn then you've got a problem with the motor, the gearbox or another part of the drive mechanism.

Sometimes a lot of dough clogs up the mechanism under the pan. If you turn it over you can sometimes dig out bits of old dough with the prong of a fork (well i can anyway!)

Hi there
I make a lot of bread with my SD206 so might be able to help you.
The first thing I would try is adding more liquid. It might just be that the mixture is too dry. Try an extra 50ml for starters. If you end up with a loaf that is very small but where there is no flour in the bottom, then that is probably what is wrong. Then it's just a case of adjusting the amount of liquid until you have it right.
Failing that, it's a motor problem.
Hope that helps
Shan
