Especially washing powder

We have an Asda, Aldi, Sainsburys, Co-op and Lidl within a bus ride. Big name washing powder is stupidly expensive unless there's a very good offer. I prefer to use the tablets or the liquid tablets to cut down on weight. Which own brand would you suggest please?

DP and I are saving up for a new roof so every saved pound helps

Marking place as good idea!

BooBooGlass · 02/10/2010 17:21

M & S washing powder is great. They always have it on buy one get one free so I stock up. About £2.79 a box or bottle I suppose, but it gets everything clean and doens't irritate my ds's skin, which a lot of others do.
Otherwise, if you have space, it may be worth joining a place like Costco and buying massively in bulk?

Faaamily · 02/10/2010 17:21

Tesco laundry detergent and fabric conditioners are £4 for 2 and are good.

Sainsbo's not bad, either, although slightly pricier, I think.

TheLifeOfRiley · 02/10/2010 17:21

I use asda washing tablets and they do the trick. Smell nice, the box seems to last and they don't irritate DS's excema.

Just give things a try. Smile

Lidl and aldi good for household cleaning products and toiletries. Cherry jam from Lidl is GORGEOUS.

Bur doesn't Costco charge £20 a year membership? I'm not sure the amount saved would equal that cost!

GypsyMoth · 02/10/2010 17:23

thelifeofriley.....and the apricot!!

ivykaty44 · 02/10/2010 17:23

asda own washing powder- just buy the small box, came out 2nd best in which trial

worst are liquid or tabs

EldonAve · 02/10/2010 17:23

I price compare on mysupermarket.co.uk

I buy surcare when on offer and the supermarket superconcentrated liquid is good value

TheLifeOfRiley · 02/10/2010 17:36

Supercherry - haven't tried the apricot, does it have nice bits in it like the cherry one?

When I am very poor I buy asda smartprice wash powder - tiz very cheap and does the job, but not much of a fragrance to it (which I like to have and don't mind paying slightly more for when I can).

notwavingjustironing · 02/10/2010 17:38

Aldi washing tablets v good and v cheap. Tesco value fabric conditioner (49p for 2 litres) is lovely.

Eglu · 02/10/2010 17:42

Aldi cleaning products are great. I've not tried their washing powder though. I do use their floor cleaner, toilet cleaner, j-cloths.

lurcherlover · 02/10/2010 20:39

Which says don't buy tablets - even premium branded ones don't get clothes as clean as powder, liquid or liquidtabs. I've always thought liquitabs (and tablets) false economy as you can't adjust the dose easily - you either use one or two. Which also says adding a bit extra is worse than not using enough as it actually stops the detergent working as efficiently.

Personally I bulk-buy at Costco - you do pay for membership, but I share it with my Mum, and it does work out cheaper over the year as a lot of stuff is bargainous!

CherryChapstick · 02/10/2010 20:42

I use Lidl washing powder tablets. I think I pay about £2.60 for 32?? No complaints.
Also love all their own branded food. I swapped from Morrisons 2 years ago and save around £20 a week.

Thank you. Well i've got some from Aldi so will report back on how they wash. Got to finish the persil first though. sorry for any typos dd is holding a piece of paper over my eyes
