Tie it up in a pillow case and put it through the washing machine?

PestoEatsPastiesandSurfboards · 29/09/2010 10:22

I haven't done this myself, but am fairly sure that other mumsnetters have in the past recommended the top shelf of the dishwasher.

I've read that washing in a dishwasher can warp or fade the bricks. Maybe its best to place the pieces in a large bowl/bucket of soapy water, making sure the detergent is alcohol free which can fade the colours too. Then leave them for a bit, give them a shake about. Then pour the water away and lay them so any water can easily run off in an air cupboard or next to a boiler.

Hope that helps Smile

We got our lego from ebay and washed it in the washing machine when we got it (was quite manky-looking). Came out almost pristine (few pieces left with v tightly squished in playdough). Have chucked it in the bath a couple of times since then with some washing up liquid.

I put DSs ebay lego in a pillowcase and washed on low in washer they came out fine :)

roastedfox · 29/09/2010 14:39

will the knot hold on a pillowcase? would be worried i'd end up with lego everywhere and a broken washing machine!

I would it them in a bucket with some milton solution or a milton tablet for a few hours, then rinse with clean water then dry off using a clean towel.

We done this with some second hand mega blocks for DS a while back.

louise3louise3 · 30/09/2010 18:52

Please don't put them in the dishwasher! I bought a lovely bag of vintage lego from a charity shop and someone told me to clean it on the top rack. Most of it warped so had to chuck it out.

DilysPrice · 30/09/2010 18:57

The tricky thing is drying them - spread out thinly on a towel in a warm dry place overnight - Lego obsessives recommend leaving a fan next to them.

Second/third the idea of pillowcase/elastic band and short cycle in washing machine. Better than dishwasher - save that for Fisher Price Grin

CuppaTeaJanice · 30/09/2010 19:10

Haven't tried this with lego, but a good way to clean things in general with nooks and crannies is with a fizzy denture cleaning tablet in water. Follow the instructions as if you were cleaning your false teeth!! Grin

Pillow case, washing mashine, biological wash powder, 30 degree wash.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 30/09/2010 19:13

I always tp it into the bath once they are done and let them kick it about, leave bathwater in so it soaks for a bit, then shower it off with squirts of dettol when the water has drained.
