Do you put wooden stuff into your dishwasher?

Mooos · 28/09/2010 01:04

even if it tells you not to?

I've got loads of wooden spoons, chopping boards etc and have always been hand washing them until I saw someone take theirs out of their dishwasher.

Does it spoil them?

yes, old ones. Don't put anything varnished.laquered.prety in as it can warp the wood a bit, but bog standard wooden spoons and boards are fine. We had some lovely steak knives and fork set with beautiful round ended polish wood, and all the shine came off Sad.

except someone will know come on and say its germy or something. But we are all fine, very very rarely get unexplained tummy upsets in this house.

alarkaspree · 28/09/2010 02:45

As pavlov says. Nothing varnished or lovely, but spoons and chopping boards absolutely. It does, to be honest, probably shorten the life of your wooden spoon from say 10 years to 8ish.

And dishwashers kill germs, they are very hot.

IMoveTheStars · 28/09/2010 02:47

you have varnished and lovely things? [feels left out]
Oh, we don't have a dishwasher anyway.

agg.. am I coming across as one of those 'hard done by' peeps? Confused

yes, DW for wooden shit unless it costs for than a fiver

ethelina · 28/09/2010 02:51

Agree ok for everyday stuff like spoons, boards etc. Not good for my bamboo- handled knife though, it split the wood.

DomesticG0ddess · 28/09/2010 08:59

I find it doesn't clean them anyway, so wash all wooden utensils by hand. Yes, bamboo will split.

EldonAve · 28/09/2010 09:01

I wash all mine by hand

Doesn't the wood absorb the mucky water?

Bonsoir · 28/09/2010 09:02

Wooden spoons love the dishwasher because they are made of a single piece of wood. Anything that is made of more than one piece of wood will not survive, as the wood will warp and separate.

DandyDan · 28/09/2010 09:37

Nope. Hand-wash all wooden stuff.

BudaisintheZONE · 28/09/2010 09:40

Wooden spoons and spatulas yes - anything else no. My Dad told me off for putting his wooden spoon in dishwasher. I reminded him it is about a pound to replace one and they come out much cleaner. Still not happy.

PeterTong · 28/09/2010 09:41

i used to regularly put the wooden chopping board in = then it split. it looked lovely before but the germs bothered me

so i got a glass chopping board and now its dishwasher proof

Ponders · 28/09/2010 09:42

yes, spoons.

The only other wooden thing I have is a salad bowl & that doesn't go in (unless DH is loading Hmm)

ProfYaffle · 28/09/2010 09:44

Same as everyone else - wooden spoons, yes (I even quite like that bleached look they get Blush), beautiful olive wood pestle and mortar - absolutely not.

HouseOfBamboo · 28/09/2010 09:50

Re wooden chopping boards and germs, I remember being told by a chef once that wooden chopping boards had been proven to be more hygienic than plastic ones.

It seems to be true:

myths about chopping boards

Re OP - I'd agree that anything made of a single piece of wood will be fine in a dishwasher, except if you want it to stay varnished or 'finished' in some way.

PavlovtheCat · 28/09/2010 15:48

germs. ha. how many people wipe their sides down with a cloth that has been left on the side for a day, after 'wringing it out? that has more germs than a toilet seat in a normally clean bathroom.

nannyl · 28/09/2010 17:03

if you put in boards that are made of more than 1 piece of wood then in time they will just break in hlaf dowm the 'seem'

however if they are cheepish, as my last boss said, she hates washing up so much she would sooner buy a new cheep wooden board every few years, then wash uo by hand every night!

Ponders · 28/09/2010 17:59

guilty as charged, pavlov. but we have had hardly any D&V bugs in this house, ever, so those germs have probably built our resistance Grin

GrimmaTheNome · 28/09/2010 18:04

My wooden chopping board died after someone else put it in the dishwasher once.

spoons and spatulas are ok.

inthesticks · 28/09/2010 18:11

There is nothing I wouldn't put in the dishwasher. So they won't last a lifetime.

PavlovtheCat · 28/09/2010 20:49

ponders me too. I read an article which said our toothbrushes were probably dirtier than our toilets, due to 'splashback' residue!!! luckily, we keep ours in the cupboard!

I occasionally have a blitz and run around the house searching for things to clean in the dishwasher! i put DDs bath toys in, DDs potty (when she used one), plastic bathroom stool, dustpan and brush, toilet brush, dishclothes, rubber bath mat, you name it, it goes in! (not at the same time as food dishes in case you think i care little about germs!)

Ponders · 28/09/2010 21:34

Oh I read that about the toothbrushes too, pavlov - ours are round a corner from the loo, & I always encourage everybody to put the seat down before flushing, but that's probably only of psychological benefit!

Dishwashing all the gubbins is a brilliant idea. I will try it forthwith.

Mooos · 29/09/2010 03:38

Toilet brushes and pottys in the dishwasher - I DON'T THINK SO!

OP posts:
damo2525 · 29/09/2010 08:05

I put wooded spoons in but now they are all bent!

Stillcounting · 29/09/2010 08:12

What Pavlov says

I use wooden and plastic boards as it happens (interesting to read that article though HouseofBamboo)

The plastic boards from Lakeland are very good and very convenient to bung in dishwasher on high.

PavlovtheCat · 29/09/2010 08:55

Moos - oh yes! I clean the dishwasher out before using if for anything else though, proper cleaning cycle with cleaning stuff, i am not that gross! And I don't put it in with wee still in it!

charmander · 30/09/2010 06:17

Yes but more importantly - do you clean it out afterwards?
