Recommend me a vacuum cleaner

Our has just gone kaput and broken its elastic band drive belt thingy for the millionth time, and the brush has gone for the second time, so I think we need a new one.

I want an upright vacuum cleaner, preferably bagless (because it's a pain buying bags).

It has to be able to cope with me moulting long hair (which is what keeps upsetting the other one).

Would like it to not cost as much as a dyson.

Is this an impossible request? I have told DP that the power of MN will magically find the perfect one - don't let me be wrong! Grin

Please? I know it's boring and you are all hvaing fun with the new private message thingy, but the hair is mounting up as we speak!

I managed to destroy our bagless cleaner in 9 months because the filters kept getting clogged up and it overheated. I would strongly recommend one with a bag.

I agree with miele cat and dog although it doesn't meet many of your criteria Hmm

It is excellent though.

TrillianAstra · 21/09/2010 16:40

Our current (dead) one is a handed down cheapy bagless machine and the filters have never been a problem, it's the hair getting caught in the brush that is the problem.

OK, silly question here, if you have a hoover with bags, do you fill up the bags as fast as my bagless one fills up with dust? Because that's a lot of bags to buy. Or does it somehow compress the dust/hair/etc so you have to empty it less frequently?

I have an argos value bagless hoover. It's not upright, so doesn't quite fit the bill. But it only cost £30 and works a treat :)

TheMightyToosh · 21/09/2010 16:57

Another vote for Miele cat and dog. They do an upright version - not sure how good it is, but I ADORE my cylinder version. Have long hair and a long-haired dog, which it deals with no trouble. (The hair not the dog).

Not cheap and yes it has a bag - but better to end up with one that does the job than one that ticks your boxes, right? Like a man, I think! Wink

TrillianAstra · 21/09/2010 16:59

I have asked DP (who actually does more hoovering than me) and he says cylinder vs upright is not a problem but would still prefer bagless. And the miele ones are more expensive than dyson, not less!

I've now got a Hettie.

Yes, it's pink but I'm secure in my sexuality Smile

TrillianAstra · 21/09/2010 17:04

Is Hettie a girl version of Henry?

FreakoidOrganisoid · 21/09/2010 17:06

Well I have two very messy children and usually hoover downstairs twice a day and upstairs once a week (I'm talking quick removal of visible bits not proper furniture moving type hoovering). DD and I both have long hair. I bought 30 bags in a bulk buy on ebay when I bought the miele (which was 2.5-3 years ago) and still have 12 bags left. So it doesn't seem to fill up that quickly

MisterW · 21/09/2010 17:08

Yes - Hettie

moragbellingham · 21/09/2010 17:15

Miele
It might be worth signing up for £1 to find out the detailed results or going to the library.
I have the Miele (black) 5211 which is great but probably not as good (or expensive as the cat and dog).

It was recommended by my old cleaner who had used a variety (including the Henry).

TrillianAstra · 21/09/2010 17:26

Think you might have convinced us re the Miele....

We definitely need a specialist hair-eating machine.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 21/09/2010 17:29

We had a Miele cylinder with a turbo brush which picked up loads more than the Dyson ball upright we now have (judging by the bits it leaves behind), but the bags lasted 3 or 4 times longer than the cannister.

I knew there was a reason for not having an upright or a Dyson but somehow forgot when it came to buying a new hoover.

It takes twice as long to clean as I have to go over everything three times, it doesn't pick up right to the edges, and if you use the extension hose up high the bloody thing falls over.

The only thing against the Miele cylinder was the weight, but I reckon the solution is to have another one upstairs.

Plus when you empty the cannister it's disgusting and you have to take it outside, put gloves on and pull balls of dust and hair out, hoping most of it goes into the plastic bag you're holding with your 3rd hand and not over you.

lucy101 · 21/09/2010 17:34

I have got a Hettie (pink Henry) and it is just brilliant and indestructible (have had various Dysons, Mieles, lots of others) this is definitely the best one.

But... it would have been (slightly) cheaper to have bought the classic/industrial Henry which is what I would do again.

realitychick · 21/09/2010 18:02

I have a red Henry and love it but so many people say the Miele is good that I'm tempted next time round. Henry is indestructible though...

NormaStanleyFletcher · 21/09/2010 18:05

Henry. V good

hobnob · 21/09/2010 22:02

I've had a Henry for over 20 years and it's still going strong, but the other day I went and bought a Hoover RUSH for upstairs (feeble I know, but lugging Henry up and downstairs was beginning to mean that upstairs never got done). My new Hoover is brilliant! Cylinder and bagless, with an easily removable dust compartment, and extremely powerful.

bacon · 21/09/2010 22:37

Sebo - best ever. lots of filters. German quality, strong & great for hair.

Yes, uses bags but the bagless thing is only a gimic, they are no better.

My friend has a white goods shop and swears that sebo are the best.

TrillianAstra · 22/09/2010 13:42

OK, have just ordered the Miele cat&dog - cynlinder and with bags so not at all to my specifications but you have all promised that it will pick up hair :)
