Upstairs Cleaning With A Toddler???

ClarasMummy · 21/09/2010 10:21

I try my best to keep the downstairs clean and tidy and succeed for the most part, if by tidy you mean throwing all toys into playroom and shutting the door Wink
I was wondering how, if you have a small toddler who isn't great with stairs yet and no way of fitting a stair gate to the top of the stairs (very strange shaped landing) do you manage to clean the upstairs during the day.
Nap time is out as I refuse to tidy at nap time (currently my nap time as well due to being 24 weeks pregnant)

Any ideas/tips would be much appreciated Smile

Get them to "help" you. It takes twice as long but sometimes you might manage to get things done...

Can you not fit a stairgate to the toddler's bedroom door? Then he/she could play in there you could tidy and when you get to their room they can help.

I'm in the same situation at the moment (stair gate is off as we're having landing carpeted later this week). I'm cleaning each room individually, shutting the door and therefore toddler in. I give him one of the attachments so he can "hoover" with it too.

With both our stair gates we've had to build wooden contraptions on one side to get them to fit. Maybe you could do something similar?

Upstairs only gets done at weekendsSmile.

DC were so used to it being impossible in a rented non child-friendly house that they now scream and cry at the bottom of the stairgate when I go upstairs for anything (in our new house).
We also had to improvise with wood for our stairgates.

Is it really impossible to fit a stair gate because that would solve your problem. The baby dan play pens have lots of accesories so you go round corners etc. I would've thought a stair gate would be a good idea once they are in a normal bed anyway so they can safely so to the loo at night.

I second 'helping'. Consider it an investment for the -life- -of- -druggery- family teamwork you'll expect from your child next year, when new sibling arrives.

so keep giving her toys to 'put in the box', or socks to 'put in the drawer' while you scurry around her.

Also, I sort laundry while I supervise bathtime.

Leave it for 3 years then catch up.

DH & I used to do all the quiet stuff (dusting, cleaning bathroom etc) at night when the kids were in bed. Then during the day I used to get DD on my hips and get DS to hold onto the upright hoover for a wee ride. Worked a treat, but it got to the stage where DS wanted on the hoover nearly every day.
