Can we talk kitchen bins (combusts with excitement)?

So we had a push button bin - sort of mock Brabantia style for about £30, with a 3 year guarantee. The catch broke. The shop replaced it. 6 months later it broke again. We'll be returning it today, and am obviously not keen on getting another.

So do you love your bin? Is it worth forking out £££ for a branbantia, or shall I just get cheap ones and consign myself to replacing them more often?

I have a simplehuman push button one. Bought from Argos for £30, so far so good - but only had it for 6 months...

Have a black, flatback Brabantia 40L number. It's now been here for 3 years. Couple of scratches which is not bad for a house with children I reckon. And we're definitely not of the showhome variety here Grin

I was so excited when I bought it. DH less so. But i have to admit, not a single problem with it so far. It's going to break now isn't it?

Not sure if i'm helping your case or not. For me, money well spent.

FloraFinching · 18/09/2010 10:14

thanks all.

Ripvanwinkle, that's what I wanted to hear. I might be tempted to spend the extra if it means an end to my twice yearly trip to B&Q to replace the damn things.

That was my justification to DH! We'd gone through 2 in a year and I was scunnered.

Even he'd have to grudgingly admit that it was worth it Smile

But i'd definitely shop around to see what you can get on offer/net etc

also brabantia give you an extra clip automatically but ours is doing quite well too.

Try John Lewis, as their own brand is made by brabantia but less in red is less pricey than the stainless steel

\link{http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_13?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=brabantia+bin&sprefix=brabantia+bin\amazon is surprisingly good for Brabantia bins} (in fact I always look at amazon first for almost everything I want to buy! Grin)

free next-day delivery on a lot of them too if you have Prime (& they also sell the binliners, ditto)

napa · 18/09/2010 15:02

Sorry to say, we had the brabantia one and lots and lots of replacement catches as they kept breaking. Eventually gave up and got a simple human one, had it 2 years now and still fab

nickelbabe · 18/09/2010 15:04

i would prefer to have a bin that has a pedal, rather than a push lid with a catch.
less liekly to break.
would still recommend Brabantis though - i had my last pedal bin for 9 years, and now it's with my ex (another 2 years) and it's still going strong.

JaxTellersOldLady · 18/09/2010 15:05

my touch top brabantia has had 2 new lids in 8 years - supplied by the company FOC. They are always helpful and it is the only one that kept my old Shepherd out of the bin! Grin

I think they are worth the money and you can get them cheaper if you shop around.

FloraFinching · 18/09/2010 15:13

weeelll... (not that anyone's interested) I decided to get a brabantia, and then my head got turned by a very shiny ASDA pedal bin for £15. I figure at £15 I'm not bothered if it does get knackered after a bit.

and I'm going to spend the change on shoes Grin.

we have the 50l brabantia and I love it. Tried to get one from Amazon first but it arrived with a big dent in it. Got one fron homebase I think in the end.

MrsDinky · 18/09/2010 22:37

We've had a pedal Brabantia one for 9 years and apart from a big dent in the top where something got dropped on it it is as good as new.

Ponders · 18/09/2010 23:07

I've had my Brabantia pedal bin for 2 years & it's still going strong apart from a tiny dent in the lid (& it's a short fat 20L one so just asking to have things dropped on it Grin)

verysomething · 20/09/2010 21:33

I've had my 70L Brabantia with a push top for over five years and it's still perfect... and it gets constant use. When you think about how many times a day you use it, it's much more worth spending money on than some other things!

Mind you it came with the house and my buttocks clenched when I found out how much the damn thing cost to buy. Blush

callmeovercautious · 20/09/2010 21:39

OK I am going to be cheap here - I bought a touch top from Argos and it was great for 12.5 months then the catch went. In desperation I bought a £7.50 plastic thing from Wilkinson to see me through while I researched Brabantia and simplehuman etc.... You know what? I LOVE my £7.50 bin!

The bin bag never gets jammed, it is HUGE and has a simple flip top that you can leave open when scraping plates etc.

Bargain Grin
