How to dye giant bedspread

I have got a super-king patchwork bedspread which is all cotton andwas rather expensive. Being thoroughly bored with the colour I tried to dye it with machine dye in the washing machine which must have been too small, as it has only dyed in parts. It doesn't look good. Sad

If I tried hand dye, would it:
a) be colour fast afterwards?
b) turn my plastic bath blue?

I would probably have to soak it in dyegon first.

Any ideas?

You need a large container to do it in - not the bath, one of the huge plastic trug things (they are infinitly useful) or a paddling pool would work.

It would be colour fast afterwards

I would hand dye but not in bath in case it stains. Paddling pool a great suggestion.

You will still need machine wash to rinse the dye out properly afterwards.

Make sure you get exactly the right amount of salt, & also make sure it is evenly damp before you start. It should be colourfast if you follow the instructions to the letter.

OK ... just need to find a large container. It is a very large bedspread - I have never seen a large enough trug thing and don't have a paddling pool. Worth looking though, if it will be colourfast.
