The cliche of the iron burn in the carpet....

Hi good housekeepers, I have never ventured in here before? This morning I put the ubiquitous iron shaped burn in my lovely landlords newish beige carpet.

I think I already know the answer but can anything be done?

Its a flatish woven rather than a shaggy job and has gone all plasticky

Is there a spare bit anywhere? I think a good carpet fitter might be able to cut out the damaged bit and replace it with a new bit. Much cheaper than a new carpet.

Failing that, a rug?

Giddyup · 09/09/2010 18:09

ooh yes we do have a spare bit, the burn is slap bang in the middle of the door way though. Thanks for replying Smile

i've carefully snipped off the top burnt hairs before in this scenario. but it depends on how deep the burn is. good luck!!

Giddyup · 09/09/2010 20:34

I think the hairs are too short, but I can't make it any worse. Will leave it until next week when DP is back from business trip and I have moral support!

You can get a carpet fitter to cut and glue. Providing the carpet is flat you should get away with it.

Tippychoocks · 09/09/2010 20:59

I just moved into a house with this in obvious places in three carpets. How?

whomovedmychocolate · 09/09/2010 21:05

Well they probably didn't want to risk doing it again on the same carpet so moved the iron from room to room in a tragic, iron-by carpet massacre! Grin

Tippychoocks · 09/09/2010 21:10

Grin Luckily (sort-of) they are all primary coloured nylon nightmares and will be going. Ever wondered who buys the tufted powder blue shag or the bright orange rolls outside the carpet shop? Look no further!

Giddyup · 09/09/2010 21:24

Thanks guys, I think the cutting glueing from a professional type is the best idea. I will put it on THE LIST.

Tippychoocks at least it is an excuse for lovely new carpets!

If the pile is deep enough and the burn is superficial you could shave it with a razor. I've done that before...

DaisySteiner · 10/09/2010 15:04

Do you have contents insurance and was the iron plugged in when it happened? If yes to both then you might be covered for the damage.
