Just doing the laundry and remember an item on the radio saying sheets, bath towels, underwear socks should be washed at 60 degrees to kill germs! Confused Do your clothes a survive that heat? If not what do you do instead? OR have I just added more unnecessary worry for the 21 century! Confused
Off to do more laundry Confused

I mainly wash bedding and towels at 60 degree wash and clothes on a 40 degree wash. If the clothes are very dirty though (especially DS if he's had a leaky nappy or has been sick etc) then it goes on a 60 degree with a bit of dettol in with the detergent to kill off any germs!

Bedding and sometimes towels. When the DC were in nappies I’d wash those at 60 too.

Now I’ve read some of this thread, I might start putting sone of the underwear through at 60. Might help with the stinky socks Smile

Everything. Don’t do cool wash. And i bung everything in together.

I put everything in together with a colour catcher at 4o
I use either Ariel or Persil powder
Modern detergents are formulated to clean at lower temperatures, also for ecological reasons
I don't understand the constant need for Antibacterial everything these days
Clean is good enough IMO

At 90°C you are probably going to destroy certain synthetic fibres so your stuff will lose its shape, shrink, melt..... and what it might do to elastic and buttons won't be pretty.

However, my DH insists on washing everything at 60°C and so far there has been no damage - not even to the pure wool trousers.... I find it hard to believe as I am a stickler for doing what the label says, so you might get away with it.... but why would you do it?

I always wash bed linen and towels at 60 but use 90 about once a month to help clean the machine. T shirts, other clothing at 40 and if I have something really delicate or not in need of a wash I use a15 min wash which I presume cannot be much more than cold. My friend always uses 15 min washes and never uses a hot one. However the outside ring of the machine is black. I suggested that was because of the continual low temperature washes but she isn’t bothered. Also dd visited a person who got rid of bed bugs asking him why they were on the up he said it was down to low temperature washes and all bedlinen should be washed no lower than 60.
