matress topper - memory foam or goose down

our old matress is starting to be a little uncomfortable, I start to feel the springs in certain places. not nice.
I was thinking of getting a matress topper and was thinking of just foam or memory foam.
but having slept in a hotel bed on a goose down/feather topper and having slept much better than I did for a long time (and I usually don*t sleep well when not at home) I thought that might be the way to go.
any experience? also with regard to maintainance?

Memmory foam is comfortable and I haven't noticed any increase in temperature. It's gone rather discoloured in patches which is a bit off putting.

I was rather disappointed to find it was literally just a square sheet of foam. Apparently you can buy the same stuff off the local market.
Check out Tim Deegan's comments on mattresses on Money Saving Expert for more info.

I would prob try goose down next time if we need another but couldn't tell you why and haven't had any probs with our Debenhams one.

Hi I bought a memory foam one for my double bed a few years ago. It does just look like a square bit of foam but it is really really comfy and I don't think it is just like normal foam of the market. It is a bit discoloured now which is a bit yuk but it doesn't smell. You can get more expensive ones that have their own I assume washable cover on. I would still really recommend one before my mattress was really uncomfortable and I had back problems. I have never tried a goose down one but I remember my SIl having one and saying how great it was. Have fun choosing HTH.

We have a goose down one and love it, but I'm not sure it would be enough given the way you describe your mattress, you may need something firmer!

thank you for your help.
yes, gardener, I fear that the down one would not be enough to rescue the matress, so I will probably look into memory foam first.
