Tea towels - how to get the stains out

BettyButterknife · 03/09/2010 20:40

I've washed our tea towels regularly at 60 degrees but the stains just aren't coming out.

Is it ok to wash them at 90 degrees even when the labels advise 60 and they are coloured/patterned? Is that the only way to get them clean again?

Are they particularly expensive tea towels?

If not I would replace.

It is fine to wash at 90 degrees. It is, imo, the only way to get stains out.

Some of them are quite lovely linen ones, like these. Stupid, eh? Wink

Nah, if they are worth keeping, try at the higher temp.

buy new ones! use the old ones as floor cloths.

Put them on the line Nice strong sunshine may work (if we get any :()

I would give them a soak in Oxi Clean. I find that does wonders for most stains, then give them a "boiled to buggery" wash at 90, plus a line dry. But to be honest, the occasional stain is part of what a tea towel's life is all about. Must admit I do iron them though.

I don*t bother to get the stains out. if they are washed at 60 degrees they are clean enough for the kitchen.
get nice towels for display and cheap replaceble ones to use .

Try an overnight soak in v. hot water and a lot of white vinegar [you all knew i was going to say that!] its good for oven cloths as well!! It also keeps the colours.

BettyButterknife · 05/09/2010 19:49

Fantastic, I'll try soaking in oxi clean/white vinegar and then a boil wash. Fingers crossed :)

If you boil them the colours will fade.

oxi clean, soak them first then put some into the washing machine when you wash the clothes
