I am just about to start my ironing - I iron everything on the list with the exception of towels and sheets (unless they look really creased) but do iron tea towels.

I hate ironing and if we could afford to pay someone to do ours I would - but I hate the thought of looking crumpled even more.

On a weekend afternoon/evening I tackle the whole house's ironing and then plan my wardrobe for the week and organise DH's and DC's clothes for the week so that clothes, shirts, school uniforms etc are ready for each morning. I hate that what shall I wear today panic.

NomDePlume · 05/09/2010 14:19

'non iron' shirts ALWAYS need ironing, no matter how you dry them... Admittely less ironing than their 'iron' counterparts but they still need a run over with the iron.

There must be some very scruffy people wandering around in these unironed 'non iron' garments....

hidetheelephant · 05/09/2010 14:19

hmmsleep I iron pleated stuff. I wear a lot of linen skirts in the summer and the ones with pleats in always seem to need an iron. I want someone who doesn't iron them to tell me what I'm doing wrong!

DS is about to start school so may start doing his shirts.

Do you iron school shirts or "smart" shirts?

OP posts:
autodidact · 05/09/2010 14:24

Linen items- don't have any atm
Pleated items- don't have any
Shirts (that aren't non iron)- partner doesn't iron his
Trousers (that aren't non iron)- no
Rugby shirts- don't have
Polo shirts - no
Tshirts - no
Sweatshirts - no
Jeans - no

autodidact · 05/09/2010 14:25

Bed stuff- no way
Towels/flannels/hankies- certainly not
Pants/socks/vests- hahahaha. No.

thisisyesterday · 05/09/2010 14:27

i iron everything except pants and socks

said · 05/09/2010 14:30

I don't have any shirts. Tops get folded after drying or hung up - body heat drops any creases. Partner irons his own shirts if he wants to (has cut down on this, I've noticed, recently). Wouldn't occur to me to iron his shirts.

Never iron school uniform - wouldn't buy stuff that "needed" ironing.

Ironically, I actually enjoy ironing. It just takes so long and just represents even more drudgery that I resist doing it.

greenlotus · 05/09/2010 14:35

I iron all the usual things, not bedlinen, underwear or towels. Normally we line or airer dry.

What baffles me is that when on maternity leave I didn't iron anything for two years, except for the odd special occasion, and it didn't bother us in the least. But somehow office clothes are less forgiving than jeans and T shirts, and now it's all or nothing Confused.

autodidact · 05/09/2010 14:36

I like ironing too. And am quite good at it. Shock:) So I feel quite skillful and proud and virtuous on the rare occasions I drag the iron out of the cupboard. But I really don't understand how people have the time to iron everything regularly.

hidetheelephant · 05/09/2010 14:39

autodidact Does DP have "smart" shirts or casual shirts? Do they look OK unironed? How do you dry them?

said Do you have rugby shirts? The collars always end up funny on DS' so sometimes I just iron that bit.

OP posts:

No rugby shirts here. They'd have to be very bad for me to get an iron out for that. In fact, I've used my hair straighteners in the past for little things like that.

hidetheelephant · 05/09/2010 14:43

That's a good idea.

Do you have any pencil skirts or smart trousers or skirts? Do you iron those?

Lulumaam · 05/09/2010 14:43

I iron all those things, including the non iron stuff. you get a neater look to the clothes.

i don't use fabric conditioner, only use the tumble dryer for towels for 10 minutes per load

everything dried on an airer.

i still , and have posted about it before, understand how people don't iron. we'd look like we'd slept in our clothes

EsmeWeatherwax · 05/09/2010 14:45

I try and iron most things, especially the kids clothes, because I hate them looking crumpled and messy. Well, they look messy anyway, but at least I know they've started out well. Dh and I both do the ironing though, so its not all my job. Whoever can be bothered at the time!

autodidact · 05/09/2010 14:47

I would say they are casual rather than smart, hidetheelephant, and look ok. My partner has a fairly scruffy style though so can get away with a few crumples if push comes to shove. But it's surprising how many of his shirts dry relatively crease-free. We line dry outside if possible or otherwise inside on drying frames/hangers.

said · 05/09/2010 14:51

Smart trousers get dry cleaned as and when and just put on hangers and crushed back to straightness in wardrobe. Washable ones get folded and creases drop out usually. No pencil skirts - work skirts are quite casual. If something looked terrible I would iron; I'm not that stubborn about it.

hidetheelephant · 05/09/2010 14:56

Yes sheets not pjs Grin

OP posts:
IseeGraceAhead · 05/09/2010 14:59

It's 2.5 years since I last ironed anything Grin It was a linen top, which I had to wear and has to be ironed. I use fabric conditioner, tumble dry with those anti-static ball things, and dry tailored items on hangers to keep their shape. I was dry-clean only stuff on the delicate program.

I don't look especially clear-cut at the edges, I must admit, but see no need to. [shrug]

TrillianAstra · 05/09/2010 14:59

Elephant you haven't actually told us what you iron.

If you are looking for rules, there are none. MN will find you people who think that ironing anything is a waste of your time right through to people who think that anyone unironed is a scruff with no sense of pride. You'll have to find your own middle ground. :)

teahouse · 05/09/2010 15:01

I iron nothing except my linen dresses, and a few cotton things if they really, really need it.
Seems us non-ironers are in the minority - despite the environmental cost of the iron!

IseeGraceAhead · 05/09/2010 15:06

Well, this is the 'Good Housekeeping' forum - I wouldn't say I fit in naturally! (I'm good at labour-saving tips, especially "Don't do housework" Wink )

hidetheelephant · 05/09/2010 15:09

I did further up Trillian Pleated summery skirts and the collars of rugby tops.
