Any reason not to buy really cheap dishwasher tablets?

Branded ones in Sainsburys are about a fiver, Sainsburys basic about £1.50 - presumably they work the same way though?

check wjhat they contain
pricey all-in-ones mean no need for salt or rinse aid

twolittlemonkeys · 01/09/2010 14:59

I use the cheapest all-in-one dishwasher tablets and they're fine. Don't know whether Sainsbury's basic ones are 5 in 1 or whatever it is...

DreamTeamGirl · 01/09/2010 15:04

I bought the expensive ones and STILL added rinse aid and salt...

Anyway, but whats on offer or the supermarket own brand 3 in 1 and they are totally fine IMO

Never used the basics ones tho- basic washing up liquid is yucky and rubbish, so probably wouldnt try the dishwasher stuff

Let me know tho, yeah?

nowherewoman · 01/09/2010 15:05

I've recently used fairy platinum, tesco's own 5 in 1, and the aldi ones that were recommended in which?. Fairy were definitely the best, even the dishwasher looked shiny inside, but the other ones were fine, lots cheaper, and you get more.

sunfunandmum · 01/09/2010 15:15

The really cheap basics tablets only seemed to work if I did a lot of soaking first and was very careful about not overloading the dishwasher. I can't be bothered with that.

Not sure about the own brand all-in-ones tablets.

My current tactic is to wait till the branded ones are on offer (one brand at least nearly always is, and get those).

I've tried lots of cheap ones, and some are good, some are bad. bought some from poundland - useless, stuff seemed to come out dirtier!

asda's smart price ones and own brand are fine, ditto tesco.

aldi & lidl ones also good

i did buy the fancy shmancy finish ones in a discount shop for about 1/2 price, and try to stick with those now.. especially as DH just bought me a box of 60 from costco !

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 01/09/2010 15:29

lidl ones are fine

yellowflowers · 01/09/2010 16:54

have done a load with the sainsbury basic ones now - seems fine to me so far.

ASDA smart price ones wrecked my glasses. Aldi ones are really good though - we can get away with using half a tablet each wash (soft-water area).

DaisySteiner · 01/09/2010 16:58

I reckon a lot of it depends on how good your dishwasher itself is. My old dishwasher did 'need' decent dishwasher tablets to get things properly clean, but my new one gets things pretty clean even with just water (have forgotten to put a tablet in once or twice!) I use Aldi ones and they leave everything really sparkling.

ethelina · 01/09/2010 17:00

Wilkinsons ones are as good as any other. Not had any problem with residue etc.

laloony · 01/09/2010 17:05

oh no, what am i doing wrong then cos every item that comes out fo my dishwasher with the lidle or cheepo ones all have a white chalky coating and have to be washed again.

do you jsut cut them in half chewytoffee?

Onlyaphase · 01/09/2010 17:11

I reckon it depends on whether you live in a hard or soft water area.

When I lived in the south in a hard water area, only the most expensive tablets got stuff clean. Now I'm in the north and have soft water, I have a knackered old dishwasher, use the cheapest basic tablets and have sparkly dishes.

whomovedmychocolate · 01/09/2010 17:29

Depends on how good your dishwasher is as well and whether you have cleaned it recently (what? You didn't know you have to clean your dishwasher? Wink).

ethelina · 01/09/2010 17:33

I live in the south east - very hard water. Our dishwasher is new. We have not noticed a difference between the Finish tablets supplied with the machine, and the Wilkinsons 3-in-1 tablets. We have also put salt and rinse aid in as per instructions with the machine. We have never had a dishwasher before to compare it to but everything seems to be perfectly clean and clear.

SmellsLikeTeenSweat · 01/09/2010 20:51

I have a Fairly new Hotpoint & can only use Fairy gel-type tablets because the 'hard' ones don't dissolve!

MrsStig · 01/09/2010 20:54

Sainsburys have Finish on half price atm.

Usually I buy Ecover to save the planet. (or not to wreck it to much, anyway)

onadietcokebreak · 02/09/2010 00:47

I think the Lidl W5 tablets came out really well in the which? report [disclaimer this may not be accurate as its only from memory!]

TheChewyToffeeMum · 02/09/2010 08:29

Yes, Lalooney. You can just snap them in half in the packets to catch any crumbs.

I only use half the amount of laundry detergent too and it is just as effective.

Rockbird · 02/09/2010 08:31

Tesco value here. Add separate rinse aid and salt but it's fab. My old crap dishwasher was lovingly fed with Finish Quantum tabs and it never cleaned a single cycle.

charmander · 03/09/2010 08:52

You should try living in NZ. I searched the supermarkets in vain looking for dishwasher salt. Turns out the water is so soft no one sells it - everyone has been amazed at the idea. My salt light on dishwasher is now permanently on. Lots of people here have dishwasher drawers.

evremummy · 03/09/2010 14:47

We've only had a dishwasher for about a month. We had some free Finish tablets with the dishwasher and found them useless as they don't dissolve properly so I bought some Fairy ones and they are great (were on special offer) but I am all for trying the cheaper brands after my experience with Finish.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 03/09/2010 14:48

I buy whatever is on offer at the time. All seem to work. Don't add salt as have a water softener and can't add rinse as the rine aid thing is brokern
