Plastic washing basket broken again - recommend yours?

Have just broken my second plastic washing/laundry basket inside a year - bottom went through and now the plastic has snapped near the handle. I've considered taking it back to Tesco to complain but am 40+11 overdue with DC3 and haven't the energy.

So, when I can get to the shops, can anyone recommend a make of washing basket made of sturdy plastic?

Not as such, but I use two large Ikea blue bags and they are just brilliant, fold up when you're not using them, sling one over your shoulder full of washing and you can carry other stuff (baby?) at the same time. Probably by the sounds of it a trip to Ikea is the last thing you need right now though....

We have some from Matalan that are great but sadly don't think they do them any more :(

we have some from tesco with handles and they are basically useless. Not sure why I got them really Hmm

I use those plastic bucket things with 2 handles that you can get everywhere - garden centres etc....

Crap description, will see if I can find a link...

blowninonabreeze · 01/09/2010 11:50

like these but a cheaper version

woad · 01/09/2010 11:52

I use a garden waste sack - they are robust, not very beautiful and hold lots.

tub trug is the name

I use those folding crates. I can then fold dry stuff and give the children one each

KnitterNotTwitter · 01/09/2010 11:53

My sister uses a wicker one which cost virtually nothing from IKEA and I use one of the plastic buckets like blow which are fab IMO...

Ponders · 01/09/2010 11:56

I have 2 Addis ones which are over 25 years old but looking at pictures of modern ones I don't think they are as sturdy now...OTOH they cost twice as much as cheap ones (iyswim) so may be worth a try!

curlywurlycremeegg · 01/09/2010 11:58

I have one of these. It's very flexible material and has survived three children jumping in and out of it!

Eglu · 01/09/2010 11:58

I use the folding crates purely for space, as I can fold them away in the cupboard.

I do break them a lot though. But I throw them onto the path, so mostly my fault. Smile

Lastyearsmodel · 01/09/2010 12:01

You are all so right. There is no reason to use crap plastic just because it's called a washing basket.

Mrs Dinky D'you know, I have a strange urge to go to IKEA... but only without the DCs. Probably wouldn't be my wisest move at the moment Grin.

Bronze Where did you find your folding crates? Have been looking for some for ages to keep in the car boot but have only seen really flimsy ones.

Lakeland! Thanks, Curlywurly. The abuse by children is part of the problem, so road testing by your three is a great recommendation.

And Ponders, thank you, will look out for Addis too. I think my Mum has one that's years old. I wonder what today's brand is that will still be going strong in 25 years? Smile

Am actually feeling quite hormonally weepy at the fabulous response to a question about washing baskets. Blush

I use a baby bath. As did my mother whose baby bath /washing basket is 36. Might as well as they are not much use for washing a baby in.

SimplySparkling · 01/09/2010 12:09

Mine is from Lakeland. Blue plastic. Rectangular and deep with good strong handles. Unfortunately, they don't seem to be selling it atm.

muggglewump · 01/09/2010 12:10

I use a baby bath too. My friend was given it, used it for all three of her children, then I used it for DD and now it's my washing basket.

bronze · 01/09/2010 12:32

My mum used a babybath too (until they moved abroad)

I did too until dh used it for catching drips in the attic and now I can't reach it

bottersnike · 01/09/2010 12:36

I highly recommend the Lakeland ones with the soft handles. They're in the new Autumn catalogue.

MrsDinky · 01/09/2010 12:51

Bet Lakeland will still be going strong in 25 years! Recently I found a 15 year old catalogue of theirs whil decluttering and it was reasurringly similar to the current ones.

I have the lakeland ones too with yellow handles. They have lasted about 5 years so far with children playing in them too!

moragbellingham · 01/09/2010 14:00

I used to use the Tesco crates because they fold up when not in use.
My DDs have broken most of them playing boats etc. so I also use one similar to the Lakeland flexi ones from John Lewis.
