Best range cooker?

So we are [hopefully] moving to a new house [hopefully] soon, [hopefully] with a bigger kitchen, so I can [hopefully] have a 90cm cooker at last!

[hyperventilates]

Please tell me if you love or hate yours.

It has to be 90cm (possibly 100 if we're lucky but I don't quite trust my measurements) and I can't spend more than £2k (ideally less).

One oven or two? Separate grill? What burners to look out for on top?

So far I am tempted by a John Lewis one and a smeg one but both are right at the top end of my price range, and I read someone saying the door of theirs fell off?!

Ah. Was going to say Aga 6:4 until I saw your budget. If God sends you a fortune, they are worth it. Ours is absolutely marvellous.

We had a stainless steel Stoves 90cm range before. It cooked well, but the transfers on the knobs came off when I cleaned it with Cilit Bang, which didn't help. But it was relatively cheap - definitely under 2K.

ohh...
we have a new britannia side by side 90cm&60cm oven. I love it. Decided against the look of a range in our new kitchen in the end, but they had some LOVELY ones... would probably be just about in budget I hope.

enjoy!

theyoungvisiter · 31/08/2010 21:30

Oooo I would love an aga! But will have to wait for a lottery win and a bigger house Grin

I don't think I have ever used this emoticon in the 4 years I've been on MN so here goes Envy

littleshinyone, what's the 90&60 one? Does that mean it's 150cm wide? (confused)

I've a 100cm Britannia (2 ovens and separate grill; 4 gas burners plus chef's top) and I love it. I did loads of research and Britannia was very well regarded by John Lewis and our local independent kitchen shop. Mine was at the top end of the range and over your budget but they come in a range of prices. Our ovens are both A+ rated for energy efficiency too. Have a look at the Kitchen Science website- we saved about £1k on kitchen appliances from there (cooker, cooker hood and fridge/freezer).

Oartistic · 31/08/2010 21:38

Good tip re. kitchen science and similar. I've just saved something like £600 compared to the John Lewis prices by buying kitchen appliances online.

MollieO · 31/08/2010 21:38

Another Aga 6:4 here too. It is a standard range cooker rather than a proper Aga, and cheaper.

littleshinyone · 31/08/2010 21:41

Oops... being a bit mental. sorry. 60&30 i guess... Smile

its the top left one here

brimfull · 31/08/2010 21:42

We have 100cm Brittania-good double oven BUT-have had it for 5 yrs and the door to the big oved is broken, the stainless steel has come away from the door .
We have tried to glue it back together as per rec from Brittania as new door is £300.
I hope it works as first go didn't

Tis a bugger to clean as well.

theyoungvisiter · 31/08/2010 21:46

yikes - glue and oven doors does not sound like a good combo!

Still the other recommendations sound good - off to research Britannia I think - and kitchenscience, that's a fab tip - thank you!

And, y'know, just if one was happening to wonder, about how much is an aga 6:4? Just in case... [checks lotto numbers]

this is my range porn

theyoungvisiter · 31/08/2010 21:50

ooo that is a beyootiful cooker [drools]

But please don't show me things with prices that start with a 3 or 4. It turns me into a bad, covetous person. Grin

try kensington belling they do it in the smaller size and you can get it in black, s/steel, gas or hob, ours was about a grand I think - 3 years ago

theyoungvisiter · 31/08/2010 22:02

I was a bit put off Belling by going into a comet at the weekend and none of the Bellings had any knobs or gas covers left.

But maybe that says more about the shoppers at comet than Belling?!

Youngv, sorry but our 6:4 was around £4K. That also included a trade discount. I think it might have included the Aga hood too, but can't remember for certain.

theyoungvisiter · 01/09/2010 08:57

ahhh well.

[Philosophical sigh]

Definitely 2 ovens. I have 'inherited' a 6-ring cooker with one massive oven. It takes an age to preheat, and it has become a bit of a deal to me on environmental and economic grounds!

theyoungvisiter · 01/09/2010 09:17

oo thank you Purpleturtle, I hadn't thought of that.

My sis has a two oven smeg and hates teh second oven because she says it's too small to fit anything in except for their smeg brand grill pan.

But actually now you say about the preheating etc, I can see it would be v handy for cooking quick lunches for the kids when you only need a tiny tray.
