How do I keep DD's bath ducks from going foul?

DD's bath ducks are grim inside- all scuzzy black stuff in em and when you squeeze out the water black scum also comes out. She likes to chew on them in the bath and I am scared that she will swallow some of the scum. Today I have tried bleaching insides (by sucking it up) but it hasn't got rid of all of it. And my S-I-L says that even ensuring all the water is squeezed out after every bath doesn't stop the scum. Has anyone discovered the magic wat to prevent this or am I going to have to buy her some new bath toys instead?

Shouldn't that be 'fowl'?

No idea by the way, just replace regularly, or buy non-squirty toys.

It's mould. Bin them and buy more.

We have managed to keep this down to a low level by washing them in the washing machine. After every bath, one duck is selected and lobbed cheerily into the washing basket and is washed at 40 degrees and then tumble dried (then squashed a bit so any remaining dry ick comes out). Seems to work.

The dishwasher is also quite good but obviously not as palatable to some.

yuk. bin.

And replace with plastic jug/cups/bottles/water pistol. All mine wanted to do was fill and pour, fill and pour, fill and pour...

You can get ducks with no holes in for mould free living Smile

whomovedmychocolate · 31/08/2010 19:50

You can all superglue up the holes in holey ducks!

IKEA sell fab stacking cups with variable holes in which are great in the bath, and when stacked up they form a lighthouse!

DontCallMeBaby · 31/08/2010 19:54

You need a Tolo duck. No hole. And so cute!

I'm afraid that if they are ducks they were fowl in the first place by definition. Try a plastic Loch ness monster or a toy whale

peachybums · 31/08/2010 22:31

The black stuff inside is mould and is toxic if breathed in or swallowed. Id throw away, but new and ensure they get emptied reg and sterilised. Failing that buy non squirty ones :)

seaturtle · 31/08/2010 22:39

Just threw out some mouldy ducks but will try sticking DS's favourite Finding Nemo toys in the washine machine as suggested by whomovedmychocolate. Has anyone else tried this?

moragbellingham · 01/09/2010 10:27

I now soak in a weak solution Milton and squirt repeatedly.
I was Shock when DD1 squirted a dolphinful of black gunky crap at DD2!
I'm removing them from circulation gradually now, they have far more fun with wooden spoons and empty mini shampoo bottles.

Sebastain and Flounder may have to stay though Sad

drinkyourmilk · 01/09/2010 10:30

I put everything in the dishwasher on a regular basis - then take them out and empty them of water whilest still hot. Haven't had mould in years.

EightiesChick · 01/09/2010 10:34

I was going to try supergluing up the holes but the dishwasher tip is a good one - thanks all.

IHeartKingThistle · 02/09/2010 09:09

It's the Nemo ones I can't bin either! I'm going to try EVERYTHING!
