Best henry or miele Hoover?

Thandeka · 30/08/2010 09:56

We used Which for our last two Hoover purchases. Both of which were shite. :( so have decided to get either a henry or a miele as I only hear good things about them.
So dear mumsnetters tell me which is the best one to buy, I can't spend another £100 odd quid on another crap Hoover! (oh and I'm a proper slattern so never Hoover until the dust level is" industrial", but sometimes we have a cleaner who will Hoover weeklyish. But we don't have pets just a 6 month old who is a weaning mess!)
Any suggestions?

Whatever you do do'n waste your money on a Meile. Come to that don't get a Dyson either.

I swear by Phillips (or electrolux - same brand) Been very happy with mine, but the more expensive ones are much better.

hitmouse · 30/08/2010 10:46

After going through just about every make of hoover known to man I got a Henry. It looks awful but works beautifully. It's so simple there's nothing to go wrong (unlike the Dyson I had) and is very sturdy.

BackOnceAgain · 30/08/2010 10:56

I heart my Miele but I haven't had Henry to compare. i sound like you on the industrial dust front. We've had ours 5 years and its a dream, rarely gets blocked. Easy to get up and down stairs and takes a good kick in if I'm 'angry cleaning' Grin

MunchMummy · 30/08/2010 10:56

I've got a Henry. Its a bit heavy, but boy does it do the job

rainbowweaver · 30/08/2010 10:58

Henry for me!

Aitch · 30/08/2010 10:59

my mum has a cheap miele and its suck is so strong that you actually need to open the valve on the stick to allow it to move. brilliant, but tiring.

elterwater · 30/08/2010 11:10

Ive got a Henry but find it a bit difficult to store - its bits just lie about all over the floor. Needs its own room really!

RustyBear · 30/08/2010 11:21

I got a free shopping bag with a Henry face on with mine, which I use for storing all the 'bits'.

I got my Henry on the recommendation of our school caretaker - he has two of the 'heavy duty' ones for him & the other cleaner, plus a George wet/dry one & told me they were far more reliable than any others he's had.

purplepeony · 30/08/2010 12:09

we have a Meile one which is not an upright- a cylinder one- if that makes sense. Bought it for DS when at uni as he has dust allergy.

Our main hoover is a Sebo and it's very good.

Hazeleyedbaby · 30/08/2010 12:24

I love my Henry - but go for the Henry Xtra if you have carpet/pets.

Snuppeline · 30/08/2010 12:27

Henry every time! Its got a very practical long cord so that you can take it out through all rooms on a given floor of your house, up the stairs even and out the front door to hoover up crumbs left behind by dc's in car. And it can be banged around a bit (I always forget to lift it from landing into kitchen before cord tightens and we've got stone floors in kitchen). Its very powerful too and reliable - lasts years. I do second it being a bit cluncky and difficult to store but worth that hassle.

Scuttlebutter · 30/08/2010 14:08

We have a Miele cylinder cleaner. It copes with three large dogs, and ensures my DH who has asthma is not wheezy. I love it. We've had it for over five years and it is going strong. Also, Miele are one of the few companies that still manufacture in the EU - I think their factory is in Germany. I am more comfortable with this than with a dodgy sweatshop in the Far East, to be honest, and am happy to know I am purchasing an item that has been made in a country with good health and safety/environmental/labour laws.

danceswithfools · 30/08/2010 14:18

I got a Henry a couple of months ago to replace my Dyson and it is great. It made me realise what hard work the Dyson was. You get a bag to keep all the bits in now. We only have hard floors tho, not sure what it is like on carpet.

wildstrawberryplace · 30/08/2010 14:24

I think I can help you here - I have a Henry Xtra and a Miele Cat and Dog cylinder.

I bought the Henry first, resisting the Miele and trusting all the rave Henry reviews, but soon found that while it is fine for the hard floors, even the turbo carpet attachment is rubbish on carpets. I then bought the Miele that I'd been comparing it with and hands down it's the best hoover I have ever had (used to have Dysons). It does fill bags more quickly and they are more expensive, though to me it is still worth it. Plus I got it with a free 10 year guarantee for parts/labour/replacement.

I use the Miele on the stairs and in the carpeted rooms and the Henry downstairs in the hall, kitchen/diner where I hoover up toddler food debris, the porch (leaves, conifer twigs, dust/soil from the garden) and spiders webs etc. It can take a lot of abuse, and the bags are cheap to replace.

I would seriously avoid the Henry though (even the Henry Xtra) if you have carpets. If not however, it'll do a decent job at half the price - but the Miele will do a better job all round on hard floors, crevices, carpets, curtains etc.

wildstrawberryplace · 30/08/2010 14:27

scuttlebutter the Henry is manufactured in the EU too, in the UK in fact!

pinkfizzle · 30/08/2010 15:24

I have had both - I did not like the Henry one, and love the Meile.

minimathsmouse · 30/08/2010 15:24

Miele Cat and Dog. I have had mine for 9 years and its the best hoover I have ever used. I second everything wildstrawberry has said.

I bought mine after using a friends while she was away. She had bought her meile cylinder hoover 25 years ago. I was amazed because it still worked like new.

The bags are expensive and they fill up fast, but the hoover will last for years and it can take a lot of heavy use.

Dawnybabe · 30/08/2010 15:26

So is the general concensus that a Henry will work well on carpet? Because we have a lot of carpet....

mrsfred · 30/08/2010 15:28

Miele cat and dog. Comes with three different heads (standard, turbo and cat & dog revolving brushes) and works really well on hard floors and carpet.

Had a Dyson last time which was pants by comparison. Haven't had a Henry before, so can't help you there.

PDR · 30/08/2010 15:30

I have both carpet and hard floors and I love the Henry! Its suction is very powerful - much better than the dyson we had before.

My DM had a Miele that lasted for 20 years so they do last! Only had Henry for 18 months so can't comment but I will say most hotels use Henry commercial hoovers (I work in a hotel) so they can't be that bad on carpet!!!!!

brimfull · 30/08/2010 15:32

I have just replaced Henry with miele cat and dog.
My carpets are a different colour now !!! so much dirt the henry couldn't handle
