does anyone have a wall of photos or a wall of photo frames?

i have just decorated my frontroom and it looks really lovely now. i have so many photos i want on display but im conscious of making my newly decorated room look cluttered.

ive decided i want a section of either the front room or kitchin/dining room to be a 'photo wall' with a load of photos in frames all bunched together eg...

style-files.com/images/frames500-1.jpg

www.apartmenttherapy.com/uimages/sf/8-13-frames.jpg

but i want this to look nice and stylish, not cluttery or crappy.

any tips? anyone else got this and made a success of it?

i think a key may be to have all the same colour frames - either white, silver or black perhaps?

Your second link doesn't work.

I love the idea of a wall of photos, and I am going to be doing something similar in our family room.

I think having different photo frames actually makes it look less clinical, but either way works.

I think if you group photos together to make a giant rectangle or whatever shape you want it looks better than all over the place.

My parents have a 'wall of fame' in the hall and going upstairs and it is lots of photos from over the years, children, grand children and great grandchildren. Family parties, weddings, engagements, it is a really nice reminder and everyone stops to look at them and comments (positively) when they come in.

I am gathering up photos at the moment to get framed and hung in our dining room.

Agree with juicy - all the frames dont have to be the same size/colour, it looks a bit too 'done' if it is. Smile

sorry, jaquelinehyde not juicy. DOH!

Needanewname · 29/08/2010 18:31

we're also doing something similar very soon.

Agree that making a giant rectangular works well, the other one is have two clear horizontal lines, all the photos above come down to that line and all the photos below come up to the lower line - you can go above or below and different styles or sizes of frames but keep the 2 lines clear - hope that makes sense!

juicychops · 29/08/2010 18:35

needanewname thats a good idea with the horizontal lines

also the giant rectangle shape is good. think im gunna google 'photo frame walls' a bit more and get some more ideas

Wow I love that link juicy, shame it wouldn't work in a normal home.

juicychops · 29/08/2010 18:41

my front room is really light brown and off-white.

do you think something like this (link below) would look good but if it was in sepia rather than black and white?

would it look a bit cluttered? or would it look stylish?

My sister traced the shape of each photo frame she wanted to hang on paper, then she blue tacked them up till she was happy with the arrangement, she said it worked really well!

PosyPetrovaPauline · 29/08/2010 20:49

i have done this recently although tis still a work in progress but i quite like the idea of adding to it when the mood takes me

white wall

white ( emulsioned) frames of random but not wildly different sizes

chuck them up and look - alter - chuck up more

very pleased with it

roisin · 29/08/2010 20:54

I really don't like this at all. I don't like any of those designs linked to. Far too cluttered and bitty and no-one would ever look at any of those pictures.

I would just put up a few in strategic places and rotate them from time to time if you feel the need.

roisin · 29/08/2010 20:55

Actually, I liked this one. But maybe in a school or an education centre or something. Not in someone's home.

this one

juicychops · 29/08/2010 21:18

i have an idea in my head now what im going to do so once its done i shall post pics up to show you all what ive decided on Smile

I have been gathering up frames in charity shops etc and have sprayed them all using plasticote spray in black gloss. I think theyv turned out great they are all different sizes and styles so doesnt look too matchy

realitychick · 08/09/2010 22:36

I don't but know several people who do and always think it looks really lovely. In some very smart houses I've visited recently the trend seemed to be for wall to wall shelving in the kitchen with nothing but family pics in frames on the shelves. In more normal homes they're up on the wall as a feature, like you said. They look great. I'd like to do one in the hall.

I wanted to do this but having really old lathe and plaster walls was worried about how to hang them all without doing too much damage.

I bought some really narrow shelves from B&Q, Ikea also do them. They have a small lip on them and the photo frames either sit on the shelf against the wall or are angled slightly between the wall and the edge of the shelf. I've gone for a selection of black frames but in various finishes and sizes. Some overlap slightly which I think looks good.

This arrangement makes it really easy to change/add different photos.
