Horrible smell when washer rinsing/draining...

It smells like rotton eggs Sad

I'm assuming the water isnt draining away properly or something?

Anybody have any ideas whether I can fix this myself or whether I need a plumber/drain man?

Ours does this too. Regularly putting bleach down the kitchen sink seems to help. I'd be interested if anyone knows what's wrong with it though!

Could just be the inside of the washing maching getting a bit smelly.
I read somewhere that you need to put a bottle of white wine vinegar in it, then run a boil wash (don't add clothes!!)
I tried it and mine is definitely less stinky now Smile

Chuck a load of soda crystals down the sink drain every few weeks then wash down with boiling hot water.

You probably have a load of gunk in your traps which is not clearing. Your washing machine has one or two traps - you'll need to check your manual. But there is generally one at the bottom of the machine behind a flap. DO NOT DO THIS WHEN THE WASHING MACHINE IS FULL OF WATER AND USE TRAYS ON THE FLOOR/TEA TOWELS ETC AS WATER - not pleasant smelling water - WILL ESCAPE.

Open flap, unscrew the plug halfway, some water will come out. Unscrew all the way. Clean out trap. Expect to find some heinous fluff and muck.

Then wash your washing powder dispenser. If you use fabric conditioner you may well have a lot of oily muck under the drawer. Remove it (usually pull out and up to remove it).

Next run you washing machine on a boil cycle with some vinegar in the drawer.

Thanks for those ideas, the washing machine itself (drum etc) doesnt smell at all. it only starts to smell when it gets to the rinse/drain part of the cycle.

Will try all of your tips though and see if any of those work!

Right, then you have a build up in your outlet pipe. Or possibly in the inlet pipe. Is it easy to pull out the machine. Check for leaks in the pipe. Also check nothing has leaked onto the pipe. If, for example, milk ran onto the flexible exit pipe hose, every time hot water ran out of the machine, it would stink.

Boil wash with soda crystals will clean the inside of the pipes though.

TequilaMockinBird · 29/08/2010 21:08

Thanks wmmc, will get DP to pull it out tomorrow and have a look.

Don't think anything could have leaked onto the pipes, it's in the utility room and we only do washing in there - no cooking or anything IYSWIM.

I'll try the soda crystals if theres nothing glaringly obvious when he pulls the machine out!

Ah - could it be a dead mouse under/behind the machine? Sorry but they do crop up in utility rooms a lot and stink when the machine is on. Bleurgh.

TequilaMockinBird · 29/08/2010 21:13

Shock A mouse?

I wont tell DP about your suggestion, think I'll volunteer to go get the papers while he has a look Grin

Oh it'll be dead if it's stinking! It's not going to run out and nibble your slippers don't fret! Grin

SunnyDays06 · 29/08/2010 22:22

I had the exact thing a few weeks ago and it was the water when I emptied my sink was somehow going straight into the washing machine, I dont know how dh sorted it! Good luck!

moragbellingham · 30/08/2010 09:24

this is useful

I also find that when you pull out the drawer, the underside of the actual machine gets a bit manky, black and blocked here.

pluperfect · 30/08/2010 09:49

I have used Dr Beckmann's washing machine cleaner, which was excellent, particularly as it explicitly tells you to remove the detergent tray (and how to do so) for cleaning, before cleaning it and then cleaning the inside of the machine.

TequilaMockinBird · 31/08/2010 09:01

Well, thanks to wmmc and her mouse suggestion, I didnt sleep all weekend pull the washer out Grin

But, I have fixed the smell, for now at least. I got some soda crystals and flushed these down both sinks with boiling water. Also washed a teatowel on a hot wash also with soda crystals et voila, no smell!

Dr Beckmanns is really good, I've used that before on the old washer which smelled really bad. This washer is fairly new though and smells fine inside the draw/drum etc. I think it must have been a drainage problem!

pluperfect · 31/08/2010 14:42

Ugh, I would rather have a manky drum problem than a drainage problem. Glad you got it fixed.

Emmasparkle · 19/03/2013 22:08

That vinegar trick really works! Thank you!
