Defeated by damp washing. Any recommendations for a tumble dryer for occasional use?

We've never had a tumbler, and I've always resisted one (on energy and ecological reasons) and have never missed it. But now with the arrival of a second child, and the rainy weather, I have 3 washes to do, and 2 lots supposed to be drying but not. Help! I need a tumble dryer for that odd ten minute blast to finish stuff off.
Anyone got a good one or not like theirs? I'm thinking we need a mid to cheap one, and no fancy stuff (if they ever come with fancy stuff?!)
Thanks trusty Mumsnetters.

Oh yes linspins, we are in exactly the same boat. Watching with interest.

I feel this will be the year I cave in too. Already had to put the heating on to dry school uniform ( Scotland) which is just crazy.

Ok, everyone must be outside pegging the washing in the garden today!! Grin Got mine out too, let's hope it dries before the rain comes back...

We bought one recently and researched reviews on here and Amazon.

We ended up buying a Zanussi ZDE47100W from John Lewis as they give an extra year guarantee and on this model the vent has 3 different outlet positions from the back of the machine, which is handy for us.

We've only had it a couple of days but it seems fine so far. It is definitely better than the 'cheap and cheerful' model we had before that was probably only £30 cheaper.

I have a hotpoint one, I can easily have it on 3 or 4 times a week and tbh don't notice my elecric bill to be much higher.

I did wonder about those condensing ones. Does it take a long time? Where we'd need to put it initially wouldn't have an outside outlet, so we'd have to open the back door and let the warm air pipe out. We will be re-doing the kitchen at some point so could put it somewhere else then.

I have one of these and it is fab!

In a similar vein to Dexter I'd recommend one of these. We put one with 8ft long wooden bits above the single bed in the spare room/office. It takes a full load of washing and things seem to dry quickly even in this rubbish weather. It may not be the thing for you, but the running costs are impressively low!

VenusInfers · 28/08/2010 19:22

Actually, that wasn't the exact one we got - ours has 8 of the wooden bits, not 4 or 6 which is all that one can do...

Dexter73, hmmm, never seen one of those before! Interesting. Not quite sure where I'd stand it though. And Venus, I'd like the kind of house I could have one of those Pullymaid things. My mum has one in her kitchen and it is good. Our ceilings aren't high enough and space is a bit limited.
I mostly use a normal wire-type airer, and stand it outside, or in whichever room I think it will least be in the way. But clothes are damp for a few days in this gloomy weather. Once the heating is on it won't be so bad. I did manage to get all the washing out on the line today, and folded and put away. Result!!

like you have resisted for years, but now have 2yr old nd 11 month old and drying the washing has gradually defeated me this year! Ds fills his nappies profusely and pretty much manages to leak over his vest, pj bottoms and sleeping bag too, so currently he is on 2 or 3 changes of all layers a day...

We got a John Lewis own brand bog standard vented dryer. Just hang the hose out the small window. It's blisws. I've never done so much washing in a short space of time since we first used it a month ago. Bliss being able to do dc's bedclothes quickly as dd will be potty training shortly.

Haven't seen the electricity bill yet but I am spoiling myself whilst the whether's bad. Highly recommend.
