Do you store condiments in the fridge?

littledawley · 26/08/2010 12:48

I am always moaning about the size of our fridge but I have realised that a whole shelf is full of condiments! My mum never kept these things in the fridge so I don't know why I do (think it's DH's thing) - so, do you?
Specifically:
Jam
Mayonaise
Ketchup
Chutneys (mango, chilli etc)
Mustard
Salad dressings
mint, redcurrant, cranberry sauce/ jelly
horseradish

(God, I've got a lot of condiments!!)

jam/jelly's that have been opened, mayo and salad dressing, yes.

Anything else in the cupboard.

suiledonne · 26/08/2010 12:52

Ketchup - no but all the others you have listed - yes once they have been opened.

geordieminx · 26/08/2010 12:54

Jam, ketchup and mayo yes -

shinyshoes · 26/08/2010 12:55

this is what is currently in my fridge
brown sauce
ketchup
mayo
salad cream
mustard
apple sauce
mint sauce jelly
chutney
cranberry
branston pickle
balsamic vinegar
oyster sauce
plum sauce
chilli sauce
soy sauce

Once opened pretty much everything goes in there. On the top shelf

Iklboo · 26/08/2010 12:56

Jam, mayo, chutneys, mint sauce & wholegrain mustard yes
Ketchup & English mustard no

AuntieMaggie · 26/08/2010 12:59

we never used to keep ketchup or brown sauce in the fridge but damn DP does so I have no room!

wouldn't put balsamic, soy sauce or chilli sauce in there tho

SixtyFootDoll · 26/08/2010 13:02

Was just pondering the same, my topp shelf and inner door are rammed with jars of sauces.

GetOrfMoiLand · 26/08/2010 13:07

Am I mad for finding the word condiments really funny?

Jam, marmalade and chutneys go in the fridge.

Mustard, ketchup, vinegar, salad cream Blush, chilli sauce goes in the cupboard.

BeenBeta · 26/08/2010 13:10

Yes, once opened everthing goes in except honey Soy sauce, Tabasco and Worcester Sauce.

IMoveTheStars · 26/08/2010 13:28

this thread is making me want to resurect this old one.
(I think the OP would have a coronary if I did though Grin)

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 26/08/2010 13:36

We keep mayo, ketchup, apple sauce, mint sauce, chutneys, mustard, pickle, chilli sauce in the fridge.

Jam and brown sauce live in the cupboard.

In general DH is far keener on things like this being in the fridge than me.

littledawley · 26/08/2010 13:36

I should clarify that I do only mean opened jars, I keep unopened in the cupboard.

So I am not the only one that has lost a whole shelf in the fridge to random jars?
I really do remember my Mum skimming the mouldy bits off the jam and we all grew up healthy....

Alibaba - ketchup in the fridge but brown sauce in the cupboard???

TrillianAstra · 26/08/2010 13:40

Yes but mainly because there is room in the fridge...

When I was a teenager and I babysat I judged the poshness of families by how many jars/bottle of condiments and chutneys and things they had.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 26/08/2010 13:49

Yes I know. I put it away in the fridge but DH moves it to the cupboard. It is the one thing that he insists does not go in the fridge. Seeing as he is the only person in the house that likes it I let him do as he likes. Grin

bebejones · 26/08/2010 13:50

If it's been opened it goes in the fridge, except Marmite, Vinegar, Honey & Syrup!

I have way too much stuff in my fridge!

Currently:
Strawberry Jam x2
Raspberry Jam
Apricot Jam
Marmalade
Apple Preserve
Branston pickle x2 (1 big chunk, 1 little chunk)
Wholegrain mustard
Tikka paste
Mayonaise
Salad Cream
BBQ sauce
Brown Sauce
Ketchup
Pesto
Cranberry Sauce

I'm sure I've missed something! Hmm It does take up nearly a whole shelf Blush

MmeRedWhiteandBlueberry · 26/08/2010 13:51

Yes, we keep all opened condiments in the fridge.

missbeehiving · 26/08/2010 13:53

I keep all opened condiments in the fridge.

Anniegetyourgun · 26/08/2010 13:56

I am a good girl, I do what it says on the packet. If they say "once opened keep refrigerated", I do that. If they say "store in a cool dry place", it goes in the cupboard. Fridge if unclear, just to be safe. Maybe I should use my own initiative more, but I don't trust myself to know better.

Scuttlebutter · 26/08/2010 16:29

Jams, mayo, pickles, chutney and sauces e.g. mustard, apple sauce go in the fridge once opened. Marmite, honey, ketchup, soy sauce, peanut butter, Lea and Perrins stay in the cupboard. Unopened mayo, jam and chutney stay either in the cupboard or under the stairs - our secret chutney stash!! At this time of the year, when I'm on my chutney production line, it gets pretty busy in there. Grin

usualsuspect · 26/08/2010 16:31

yes

ShatnersBassoon · 26/08/2010 16:32

No, I hate dipping hot chips into fridge-cold ketchup.

Fruity things like jam and cranberry sauce go in the fridge, but everything else goes in the larder.

darcymum · 26/08/2010 16:34

I keep them all in the fridge, apart from salt and pepper (do they count as condiments?)

I have heard that you used to be able to keep ketchup in the cupboard but these days it needs to be kept in the fridge because some of the preservatives have been taken out (?) Don't know if I believe it though, I may have just made that up.

Seona1973 · 26/08/2010 16:37

our ketchup bottle says to put in the fridge after opening so thats where it is.

notagrannyyet · 26/08/2010 16:49

In the fridge,

Mayo
Salad cream
HP sauce
Ketchup
Beetroot (if shop bought)
Pickled onions ( " )
Various dips

Basically all open shop bought stuff.

In cupboards,

Home made chutnies, pickled beetroot, onions,
Also homemade jams
Any dry condiments

I used to make home made ketchup and cordials and if I still made them I would keep them in a cupboard. Old fashioned preserving is fine out of the fridge, even when opened. Not sure why modern shop bought stuff needs to be in a fridge. DH thinks they don't use full strength vinegar.
