not that it smells horrible or anything, but i would like it to have a nice fresh clean scent that is not too overpowering, think, something along the lines of the smell of fabric conditioner?

i have tried a few different air fresheners but they make me feel slightly sick Confused and i know they are not good for the environment or children etc, so would rather not use them.

i also use shake and vac (mainly because i like to be able to see where i have hoovered :o ) but not keen on the smell of that either, tis a bit synthetic and cloying.

i keep my house clean but never seem to be able to get it smelling as nice as some people's houses i have been in!

any ideas?

Ooh also, Body Shop oils in the burners are lovely, they have some really nice smelling ones (not horrible artificial smells).

themildmanneredjanitor that link didn't work when I just tried it, what is it for?

nancydrewrocked · 26/08/2010 12:07

Windows open for a couple of hours a day and diptyque candles - they are expensive but they smell real (as opposed to that horrid synthetic fragrance you get from many) and last for ages.

The tumble dryer sheets, called Bounce, I think, placed over the radiator in the winter give off that nice fabric conditioner smell.

Mildmannered, I have a Dyson. What is that on your link? It won't work my end Confused

Am I the only person who doesn't like the smell of fabric conditioner? Confused

CerealOffender · 26/08/2010 12:16

my top tip - don't let house guests shit on the carpet.

i grow lots of sweetpeas in teh summer which are divine. in the winter i am a bit clueless.

ILovePonyo · 26/08/2010 12:19

Thanks mildmannered, £3 is a bit of a bargain for that as its more expensive when I've seen it in supermarkets.
Will be trying it out on my dyson!

loopyloops · 26/08/2010 12:21

lol @ Cereal!

Bake something! Especially now the weather is cooling. You can whip up a batch of dough on the weekend, divide it up and freeze. Then every night move a piece to the refrigerator and bake in the morning. Baking definitely makes for a great smelling house.

coffee beans in the oven.

Or bake muffins, bread.

Keep windows open, and keep it clean!

tothesea · 26/08/2010 12:38

I hate the smell of fabric conditioner spiritmum, I can't understand why anyone wants their clothes or bedding to smell so strongly.

TrillianAstra · 26/08/2010 12:41

I prefer the smell of 'no smell' to fabric softener personally.

Smell of baking or a coffee machine is alway nice.

LOL at baking soda being non-chemical. How is sodium bicarbonate non-chemical? Just because your granny used it doesn't mean it's not a chemical.

peachybums · 26/08/2010 13:21

I go into the garden and chop up some lavender and mixx it with bicarb to sprinkle on my carpets. I save a bit back for winter when my bush isnt flowering and dry it, still smells ok just not as strong.

I have yankee candle tarts, they are cheaper, last for ages and cos they are cheap i can get lots of different smells for my money.
