<Shudders> How the hell do I get rid of Silverfish?

I've just found some of the little buggers crawling around in my kitchen on the surface and then again in the bathroom.

I have just bleached the entire kitchen and wiped down the bathroom and am now wanting to plan their destruction.

How do I get rid of them, please help me. I hate creepy crawly things!!

they fascinate me...they are prehistoric you know!

they tend to live where there is damp. do you have a problem with damp at all?

Hermya321 · 22/08/2010 23:48

A little bit in the bedroom, but nothing too extreme. Other than that, we try to keep the house well ventilated.

Bless them. They're lovely and shiny and do no harm.

itstheyearzero · 23/08/2010 06:38

We found these when we moved into our new house. We removed the old dishwasher and the next morning I came downstairs to find the kitchen full of the little buggers - yuk. Think they must have ben living under the dishwasher. OH put some ant powder down around the edge of the cupboards/new dishwasher/washing machine etc and left it for a few days. Then we hoovered it all up, and since then we havn't seen any!

belgo · 23/08/2010 06:48

I love them. It's like having mini dinosaurs in my house.

AlicesWonderland · 23/08/2010 06:54

we have these too, infact when I took the wallpaper off in the living room there were loads underneath it near the fireplace opening

I put down a load of insect spray and this seemed to get rid of them but I keep seeing them in the bathroom and here and there

Ilythia · 23/08/2010 06:55

Aw silverfish are cute. I don't mind them as they are attracted to damp, not dirt, so aren't really a bad thing.
plus dd's think they are magic for some reaso.

Hermya321 · 23/08/2010 08:30

Alice What sort of spray did you use?

I do appreciate that they're not going to eat me, but they're all creepy and crawly and I just don't like them.

i found one under a leaky tap one0 - i wonder where it came from in the first place, like slugs where do they live when it's hot and dry

MoChan · 23/08/2010 09:20

I can't believe so many people think they are horrid. They are so sweet and pre-historic.

Again · 23/08/2010 11:57

I feel ichy!

FranSanDisco · 23/08/2010 12:01

Yes where do they come from and what are they doing when it's not damp Confused.

Hermya321 · 23/08/2010 12:03

I don't know what they're doing, but I get the feeling it involves a campaign headquarters.

I think you are talking about firebrats. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firebrat But yes, they probably meet up with the silverfish once a week to talk tactics. Grin

YesBut · 23/08/2010 19:56

Upstage them with goldfish? (sorry, unhelpful)

I don't mind 'em though (still unhelpful)

they are fascinatingly mercurial Smile

belgo · 23/08/2010 19:58

Those firebats look like earwigs.

Hermya321 · 23/08/2010 20:47

My GOSH!!!! They're planning a takeover!!!! Shock

Ppppppplllllllleeeeeaaasssssssseeeee does anyone know of a spray or even some sort of Musical bloke who can lure them down the street into a more welcoming abode.

(Although if they stumped up with some rent, I might be more inclined to let them stay).

Yeeesh I just read the silverfish reproduction notes on wikipedia and I now feel a bit sick Hmm

We have them. They love thatched houses. The trick to get rid of them is to cut off the food supply and sprinkle cinnamon round the perimeter (works also with ants btw).

shubiedoo · 23/08/2010 20:54

But doesn't it take a really long time for them to reproduce? So you probably don't have that many.

Ant powder - but beware. DD had them in her flat. She sprinkled it around the skirting boards before she went to bed and was freaked out when they instantly ran out from all the nooks and crannies and ran up the walls. After that she used to do it in the morning before she went out and then vacuum the bodies up when she came home.

fortifiedwithtea · 29/07/2017 13:57

We have them in the downstairs loo. They don't trouble me, I don't trouble them. Their numbers have stayed the same since we moved in some 13 years ago.

They give me something to look at if I'm in the loo for any length of time Blush
