What do you have on your windows?

I'm looking for something to replace our old net curtains. We moved house last year and I took down the inherited nets downstairs (have still got them upstairs but hate them) a couple of months ago, trouble is everyone can see right in and I really don;t like it.

I love beng nosey and looking outside so the window film things are a definite no for me.

I love wooden shutters but it would cost way too much and not really suit the house (1930's with very wide window).

I really just want something that lets me see out but stops others from looking it and keeps it all nice and light. Any advice?

We have vertical blinds.

Thay are not the most attractive thing but were a reasonably economical for a large window as ours is 3 metres wide.

I don't have anything upstairs mind. I just shut the curtains if getting changed.

DebsCee · 22/08/2010 22:38

How about wooden horizontal blinds, you can tilt them so that others can't see in but they still let you see out and plenty of light in.

Needanewname · 22/08/2010 22:42

Thanks. Feedthegoat, I personally really don;t like the vertical blinds (don;t mean to offend you), DebsCee, we may look at the horizontal blinds but I was worried they wouldn't let enough light in. Also will be looking at changing the curtains too and not sure if woden blinds go with curtains.

Any other ideas or anyone happy to tell me what you;ve got at your windows.

No offence taken, they aren't my favourite either. I would much prefer wooden blinds but couldn't have afforded it straight away with the window size.I just got impatient with living with the goldfish bowl effect and went for a quick fix!

Needanewname · 22/08/2010 22:54

LOL, know what you mean feedthegoat!

Don't think vertical blinds would help if you want to be nosey, but we have just bought some for our front window (ex-dining room, now an office) from a company called Tuiss, not put them up yet but they look good, a bit less "industrial" than the ones in Argos/Homebase which seemed to come in every shade of neutral-office-beige there was, ours are deep purple/aubergine colour.

Tuiss, top half are all beige then it gets funkier!

Needanewname - are you me? I have the exact same dilemma...big window, 1930's house, grim nets ripped down, now living in a goldfish bowl, nosey person!!!
I'm wondering about cotton lace panels (vintage style) rather than nets, that would mean people can't see in at all, but I would have to twitch it aside to peep out! I don't know where you get these yet though. Or, as others have suggested horizontal wooden blinds.
Anyone else got any lovely ideas?

Fluffypoms · 23/08/2010 09:10

wooden venitian blinds perfect as can be tilted so nobody can see in, but you can still see out!

p.s i know because i am nosey too

Poledra · 23/08/2010 09:12

Dirt.

linspins · 23/08/2010 09:27

Poledra Grin - me too!

Ilythia · 23/08/2010 09:41

I have plain nets on min but only 2 thirds, they have small panes around the top and they are open, but high enough that no-one can see in.
My kitchen window is frosted and patterned with no covering but it is opposite a bus stop and at night is like a stage show. I need somethign for in there.

On my back door I have maggots. Lovely. Would stop people looking too closely though.

fairybubbles · 23/08/2010 16:35

I have ikea wooden horizontal blind, 2 up side by side as window is wide. They look great. Oh and my lovely plum curtains look really nice as I went for the dark wood.

SwansEatQuince · 23/08/2010 16:46

Fablon, after BadKitten's thread. Grin

It looks really good (bathroom window with plain glass before)

The other windows either have nets , venetian blinds or just plain.
Dutch stylee window for best room.

Needanewname · 23/08/2010 19:45

Fairy bubbles maybe I will look again at the wooden blinds and curtain combo.

Agree re the dirt but maggots????!!!!!!

Plants on a windowsill? Really shiny and CLEAN windows with maybe a mirror to blind/reflect light into passersby eyes?!

create · 24/08/2010 11:07

My front window is 8ft by 5 ft Shock and we live opposite the school, so many many passerbys.

It's a bit extreme, but when we had the windows replaced (needed doing anyway honest), I had them broken up into 5 panels (like a bay) it's made a huge difference.

I resisted horizontal blinds, although I do like to look of them. I inherited some with my first house and they were filthy, difficult to clean and then dusty again very quickly thereafter.

I keep with flowers or a large plant on the windowsill and whilst it's not perfect, I don't feel quite so overlooked as I did and can see out beautifully!

Needanewname · 24/08/2010 21:23

Well, had a chat with DH last night, he is dead set agaist the idea of horizontal blinds so that ruels that one out!!!!

Maybe I can change his mind though!

create, I agree re breaking the window up, but its going to be a while before we have the money to replace the windows, but when we do we will def change the style.

Thanks ladies - any toher ideas that people have or nice nets if there is such a thing! Wink

If anyone does want vertical blinds, we put our plum ones from Tuiss up today and they look fab - the people on the phone told me exactly how to measure the rectangular bay to make them fit, and they do! So for £100, you can stick that up your £250 tracks Mrs-any-shade-of-beige-or-it-costs-more from Hillarys!
