Can you get mould off grout without using bleach or chemicals?

My bathroom tiles are horrendous, as is the silicon sealant. Really black.

I try not to use bleach in the house (hence my predicament, it wouldn't have got to this stage if I had bleached the f*k out of it from the start)

I'm allergic to bleach. It affects my breathing and brings me out in a rash around my mouth and nose - melodramatic but true.

DH could do it. But he does loads of other stuff and the bathroom is supposed to be my job. I'd like to find something that works if poss.

Am watching with interest! I've only got it in the silicone atm so we might just need to replace that. I've avoided getting any in the grout by using a scraper and ecloth to dry down the shower every most times. Have never used chemicals and it's a year old. We obviously haven't done it properly round the shower tray though.

I used to use Dettol Mould and mildew spray - it's very strong and I used to spray quickly while holding my breath and then leave! But we have a new bathroom now and the bleach will take the chrome off the plughole.

What about a steam spray. It should get read of everything nicely. It is expensive to start with, but if you are allergic that would be the best solution for you.

aghhh "get rid" Blush

You could try a paste made from borax and lemon juice. Leave it on for an hour and rinse it off.

Lakeland sell some stuff that is pretty effective for this.
Can't rememeber name but I bought it and was surprisingly effective.

Thanks, will look at Lakeland and see if the stuff is evil or benign.

Steam is a good idea - hadn't thought of that - my mum has a steam cleaner somewhere I think.

Borax/lemon juice/white vinegar and all that jazz I have never ever tried. Does it really work?

I also used to dry tiles and edges of bath after every shower - when the bathroom was new - this lasted for a good year or so but the new bathroom novelty has worn off a bit. The room is 3 years old now and starting to look it.

That Milton sterilising fluid works well too. No idea why but that's what we used and the silicon is now nice and white.

the silicon sealing is really easy to remove and renew.
you can get anti mould sealant and it is really simple to apply.

ppeatfruit · 21/08/2010 12:40

Doggies the vinegar def. works ( heated preferably and leave it on. I've not tried borax but i think it works, bicarb doesn't IMO. The anti mould stuff is very strong though mousey.
