My champagne flutes kill bubbles!

It really is a disaster! Wink

Well, it's quite annoying. Pour bubbly in my champagne flutes and there are bubbles no more. I have been told this is because I washed the glasses in washing up liquid Hmm...

Anyone know how to revive my glasses and bring my bubbles back?

It IS a disaster Grin
I assume you rinse the washing up liquid with hot water?
Sometimes it is the shape of the cup, are they unusual?

WkdSM · 20/08/2010 11:40

I drink it too quick for the bubbles to go flat................

WkdSM · 20/08/2010 11:41

Or if you are really posh you can swig it from the bottle .............

LoveInAColdClimate · 20/08/2010 14:45

If you don't rinse them after washing them with Fairy Liquid (or whatever) they do make the bubbles go flat... but as long as they are rinsed, using washing up liquid is fine.

I used to have some that were upside-down cone shaped if that makes sense (more vertical than champagne saucers, though) which made the bubbles go really quickly. I find "normal" flutes work best, but is just personal opinion.

rockbudgie · 20/08/2010 14:49

It's definitely not the shape - they used to "work" fine. They are admittedly horribly cheap although I've just been inspired to buy some new very-expensive very-reduced ones...

Anyway, I digress. I do normally rinse them. I think. Mostly. Sometimes. Blush

Is that really the problem then?! What do I do now? Just rinse them really really well...?

I use the baby's bottle washer brush to wash and rinse ours.... Blush but he is too old for bottles now really so it's more a case of reuse-recycle than anything else!

pirateparty · 20/08/2010 14:52

And, yes - it is a disaster Grin- get it sorted!

MimieD · 21/08/2010 11:11

You should only rinse champagne flutes in hot water and not use washing up liquid. So I've been told at the Taittinger champagne house... Just rinse out your glasses to ensure all soap is out and leave them to collect some dust over a week and it should be fine again Grin

Bubbles need to form on something - your flutes are too smooth! - you need to scratch the bottom of the glass.

Bacofoil · 21/08/2010 11:19

Is this the poshest dilema on mumsnet? Grin

nickelbabe · 21/08/2010 11:22

according to QI last night, the bubbles form on dirt molecules- don't scratch your glasses!
all you need to do is wipe them with a tea towel on the inside when you've washed them - that will put a load of fuzz onto the glass (microscopic, not harmful!)

rinsing them will get rid of anything that already in there, although if you have limey water, that will be goo for bubbles too.

Bacofoil · 21/08/2010 11:33

Good champagne flutes (ooh, get me!) are pre-scratched, in order to allow the bubbles to form.

Having said that, yes to swiping flutes with teatowel - same effect and much cheaper!
