Ive just been bitten on my lower side in bed (it couldnt have been a mosi) and now I remember other similar recent bites on DH and I.

Arghhh

Bed bugs?
Fleas?
How do I tell what the problem is?

What do I need to do?
Is hoovering/cleaning/washing at 60 degrees good enough?
Do I need to treat other beds? (I often move to sleep in with the baby part way through the night)
We have wooden floors and rugs - shall I hot wash and risk them coming out as flannels?
If we get a new bed (was hoping to get one soon) how do I prevent it getting infested?

We live in southern europe where I dont speak the local language so will have difficulty calling in a pest control person or even buying spray etc. Doh. (I am also pg so Im not sure I can use spray).

Please help. I need sleep!
But I dont want to go back to my bed. Arghhh

Not sure if this might help:

Ugh. Poor you.

Thanks very much Cupcakes - will have a look.

Ive had a close look at the bedding/mattress etc today and can see no sign of anything.

But to be safe am hot washing everything possible etc and will follow the instructions.

From internet if we had bed bugs then I would see something?

I hope I don't freak you out, but DH had what turned out to be a small spider living in his half of the bed.

If it is bedbugs, there are loads of American sites devoted to getting rid of them, as they are endemic in NY.

I would get one of those hand-held steamers. That will kill anything living in your mattress, with no chemicals.

ninedragons · 17/08/2010 13:15

Just to add, I really wouldn't have the place sprayed unless it's totally unavoidable, and even then I'd go and stay somewhere else for a fortnight - those chemicals are way too nasty for pregnant women to be exposed to. Particularly in southern Europe - I don't know where exactly you are, but do they have standards of health & safety that Germans would find acceptable?

if you have a cat or dog my bet is on fleas. This does not mean your house is dirty.Fleas are so quick that you probably would not see them, we had a problem with our cat this year. we got a brill spray from the vet called ACCLAIM and everyone vacated the house and I sprayed all the crevices down the sofas etc, boil washed the bedding, shook out and sprayed the rugs and doused the cat in FRONTLINE, no more fleas, yipee. I think the hot weather encouraged them, but they are no more. if you have any pets, fleas are always a worry even on the most cleanest of cats, we live in a rural location and there are lots of animals around, so we were bound to get them eventually, but hopefully with regular frontline they are under control. the fleas bit my husbands leg when he was in bed, even though the cat doesn't get in our bedroom, the little buggers can sure jump and travel. they were very itchy raised lumps.

Thanks very much for your suggestions.

We dont have a cat or dog (sadly!) so I dont think its that but frontline is very good for them.

The spider suggestion is pretty yukky but actually makes sense as I cant find any evidence of anything.

A steamer thingy is a good idea, and Im sure I can probably get one here (Austria) or at least get one shipped in.

I have hot washed everything possible, hoovered and sprayed mattress/topper etc with a dettox type spray. Hopefully that will do the trick until I can persuade DH we need to buy a new bed.

Hopefully I will sleep better tonight!

just an idea - but try "ironing" the mattress - the hot steam and heat might kill anything?
