Separate Tumble Dryer or Dishwasher - which would you choose?

My washing machine is really on it's last legs and I need to replace it. I currently have a separate tumble dryer but this means that there is no room in my kitchen for a dishwasher.

So, my question is, do I buy a combined washer/dryer so that I can also have a dishwasher? ( I have heard that they are not that great....) Or do I stick to separate appliances and continue to manage without a dishwasher?

Try as I might, I cannot fit a tumble dryer in any room other than the kitchen. Also, I am not keen on having a table top dishwasher as I have very little worksurface as it is, so these compromises are out!
Any opinions gratefully received.

How many people live in your house? How much do you hate washing up?

I had a combined washing machine/tumbler when I lived in a flat, and it was fine for little bits and pieces, but no comparison to a full sized tumbler though.

I do, however, LOVE my dishwasher, and would loathe to be without one now. I have three children though, so think I would be permanently washing up without it.

I can't really imagine being without a tumble dryer in the winter either though. But if I HAD to chose, I'd choose the dishwasher.

Dishwasher definitely.

I've been in this situation, and chose a washer/dryer and slimline dishwasher. I only tumble dryed towels (to have them nice and fluffy) and the odd other load, as otherwise just couldn't stay on top of the washing. I got a sheilamaid to hang laundry to dry on all year round.

New house now and have both - would find it hard going back.

Dishwasher without a doubt!!

Thank you - this is really helpful.

Celery there are three in our house at the moment - dh, dd and myself but have another on the way. I don't hate washing-up that much, I tend to wash up as we go along during the day and then dh washes up after we've eaten in the evenings. He hates doing this to be fair and so probably wants a dishwasher even more than I do!

We've only had our dishwasher since Christmas and we love it so would go for the dishwasher

Bechka · 15/08/2010 21:47

Dishwasher every time!

moodymary · 15/08/2010 22:30

Seems unanimous - dishwasher it is then. Many thanks for your replies.

If your stuck for space we find a slimline dishwasher perfect for 2 adults + 2 children and it copies fine with extra visitors we just run it once a day normally or after tea/coffe + big meal with guests. This way you don't end up with masses of dirty crockery locked away.

cluelessnchaos · 16/08/2010 11:53

dishwasher, could you stick the tumble dryer in the garage/shed for when you might really need it

emptyshell · 16/08/2010 14:29

I wouldn't live without my dishwasher! Could cope without a drier or with an integrated one - but I'd leave home if I had to deal with Mister Uses Every Pan To Make A Sandwich and no dishwasher.

SixtyFootDoll · 16/08/2010 14:33

Dishwasher.
You can put a tumble dryer in another room if you need one that much.

Celery · 16/08/2010 19:26

Oh, forgot to say, our tumble dryer is in the garage.

Dishwasher

Clothes can be dried around the house on radiator airers
Or what about one of those scoth airers, y'know a pulley that hangs from the ceiling ( I'd love one of those )
Having said that I treated my self to a condensing drier that doesn't need venting so can go anywhere
