Used limelite in the shower and now the plughole has discoloured and gone a sort of rust colour. Tried scrubbing it off with scourer and bicarb of soda to no avail! Panicking cos house is rented and we are moving soon. Any suggestions please - even something to mask it temporarily? Naughty I know. But landlord is a sod.

What colour is it and what is it made of? If metal, can you get a matching paint colour - hammerite or something similarly waterproof and paint it?

Thanks that's something I def hadn't thought of! Yes it's a metal plug hole presumably aluminium as having now read the insructions somewhat too late, it says it will discolour aluminium. Will poss try that if all else fails. Any other ideas?

You should be able to get a replacement plughole cover for a few quid. Try B & Q or Wickes. You can usually remove the old one using a screwdriver to undo the screw in the middle (it's gross under there though, so be warned) and take it with you when you go to buy the replacement.

Thanks generalissimo had no idea it could come out! Will try this morn.

Don't panic.
I had rust spots in my sink (rented house) from an accident.
Buy some Barkeeper's friend from Robert Dyas - it's bloody brilliant

Hmmm, not sure about aluminium but it works a treat on stainless (rusty) steel!

I don't think it works on aluminium morag - it's a chemical reaction which has taken the seal of the metal and now it's rusting. You can either buy a replacement seal or sand, seal and then varnish the plug cover (replacing the cover is obviously easier.)
