Food wast bin - how to keep clean/hygenic?

We are only on week two of this and already I have had to bleach the inside caddy out as it was so yuk with mouldy food stuck to the bottom. I am using newspaper as the council suggest but it hasn't helped much.

I dread to think what a mess the outside one without newspaper lining is going to be like in a few weeks. Should I newspaper line this one too?

What do those of you who've had brown bins for a while do to keep things clean?

Brown bin - full of maggots. I need to email council on what they suggest. The hot weather we had combined with fortnightly collection is not good. We split a cereal box or similar in the caddy and that holds most not-too-liquidy stuff. I find the mess quite depressing so not much help I'm afraid!

Use compostable liners in teh kitchen food waste bin.

StrikeUpTheBand · 03/08/2010 11:44

We were given the liners to use - they are a pale green colour if it helps?

We haven't got a caddy yet though!

hocuspontas · 03/08/2010 11:57

Herts won't allow the liners because they don't trust householders to use the compostable ones!

Scootergrrrl · 03/08/2010 12:04

What about brown paper bags? Like the ones you get in Ikea?

Jumbs · 03/08/2010 12:17

Sounds like I just need to improve my newspaper lining then. I would rather do that than fork out for compostable liners. I use the free newspapers to do the lining, since they would only go in the recycling anyway.

I do feel sorry for the bin men who have to empty them, it must stink and be really gross!

I am feeling your pain!
Currently putting layer of paper in the bottom, then compostable liners and wrapping particularly juicy left overs in more newspaper.
washing out outside caddy weekly with bleach and very hot water, but still bloody maggots.!!!!!!

If your outside caddy isn't too big to manoeuvre and you have a garden, try tipping it on its side in the grass - ants will usually eat out the food waste.
This may make you feel a bit icky, but it's better than maggots!
If the ants "clean" the outside caddy all you then have to do is wash it out in a mild bleach solution and leave it dry naturally.

I've got 2 caddies (bought one myself from ecotopia I think). I just fill to the top then put in compost then ribse and shove in the dishwasher (other one then used for the waste). Some might say not eco friendly, I'm not syre cos you use tonnes of water and detergent cleaning it by hand.

We don't use a caddy, just put our compostable stuff inside an empty cardboard box (tissues, cereal, we always seem to have one!) and put this straight into the bin. We do have a nice big bin with compartments so can keep cardboard box out of sight.
