Washing Machine recommendation

Hi all

I had a quick look through the list and couldn't see a recent thread about this - if there is one, please feel free to link me to it instead of replying!!

I need to buy a new washing machine and don't know what to buy, so I'm hoping for a little help

Criteria:

[I don't want to get a 'Miele' due to weight/cost, but I'm not looking for the cheapest option either]

  • Quick wash option - preferably 30-40 mins. I'm not sure the 15 min ones are good enough and over 40 mins isn't really 'quick'.
  • Quiet - it will (unfortunately) need to be in the kitchen, open plan to sitting room and I don't want to be restricted to only putting it on when we aren't in the sitting room.
  • Minimum 6kg capacity, would prefer 7 or 8.

Any comments on whether it's better to have a 'cold fill only' machine or one that will do both?

That's all I can think of - all other comments welcome though!!

You really can't beat a Miele!!

ChippingIn · 29/07/2010 16:27

I know and if we were going to be staying in this place I'd probably get one, but at 120kg and a few moves on the horiszon I just don't think it's a great idea...

However, in case I'm swayed - what model do you have??

What's a horiszon???

We've got an 11 year old Bosch washer dryer and it's brilliant! Still going strong.

Thanks you two!

This is a shameless bump....

Pllllllllllllllease give me the benefit of your wisdom!!!!!!

We bought this recently and I LOVE it!!! Ours is an integrated one as it goes in our kitchen (also open plan to front room) behind a cupboard door. It does have a quick wash of 15 minutes that I have to say so far is fab when needed, but the basic easy care washes are also really good and seem to wash really well in 45 - 60 minutes. You can for each type of wash, change the heat and rpm setting which I like and it is relatively quiet bearing in mind we are always in the front room when it is on.

I did do quite a bit of research on the interent and which before buying too and it had brilliant review all around and I would recommend it to anyone at the moment!

Hendo - it sounds great. I was rather hoping not to have to spend that much though

But it does sound good...... hmmmmm.....

I have a fairly basic Bosch (it does have a timer display but is otherwise pretty simple) which was under £300; it washes brilliantly & despite being upstairs, on floorboards, it's so quiet I have to keep checking it hasn't stopped working

Mine isn't made any more but I'll have a look for an equivalent

ChippingIn · 29/07/2010 22:32

Thanks Ponders - that would be great!

this looks the most like mine but it's more expensive now I'm afraid. Only 6kg, not 7 or 8, but it does say it has a 15 min quick wash!

Bosch work well & are pretty reliable - next best to Miele really.

ChippingIn · 29/07/2010 23:10

Thanks Ponders

I've been looking at the Bosch range, it does seem to be the best option after Miele.

You're welcome

Forgot to mention the cold fill thing - I think they're all cold fill now, & it doesn't seem to make much difference to washing times. The amount of water they use is so small that the water probably wouldn't have run hot yet even if they did have a hot intake, iyswim.

The times on mine are 42/62mins easycare/cotton at 30 degrees, & 47/70 at 40 degrees, & that's a proper wash. (The time remaining display is brilliant, I'd never buy one without it now!)

ChippingIn · 29/07/2010 23:23

They are good 'full' washing times. The old one had a regular washing time of something like 3 weeks.... well, 3 hours anyway!!

When I spoke to the bloke in the shop, he said Bosch have 2 lines now, one made in Germany with better parts and one made in Taiwan with cheaper parts - I couldn't seem get one under £475 in the German range....

Will have to look into it a bit more but Bosch is winning so far.

i think bosch and AEG are brilliant. AEG used to be Zanussi which are top notch.

ChippingIn · 29/07/2010 23:27

Aly - I have been put off Zanussi by friend who has had nothing but problems with hers. how long have you/did had/you have yours for?

OP posts:
alypaly · 29/07/2010 23:53

i have had a Zanussi for 12 years until i had my new kitchen ,than i decided to get an AEG as a friend who is a machine repairer said they are made by Zanussi but much cheaper. He also said hotpoint machines are made at the Bosch factory too. I have had my AEG 5 years know, its really good

ChippingIn · 30/07/2010 00:12

Arghhhh

LOL

I thought I had ruled out Zanussi & AEG (due to friends hassles) and Hotpoint due to another friend saying hers sounds like a DC10 taking off....

I'd like to win one so I don't have to make a decision, it just turns up!

sorry

ChippingIn · 30/07/2010 00:27

LOL

is right!!!

Ours is a Hotpoint Ultima WMD 940, bought last autumn after getting rid if the NOISIEST
washing machine ever.

It is very quiet (one of the most important criteria) and has lots of washes, including a 30 degree 30 min quickwash. You can also change temp and spin speed. It's also 8kg load.

I love this machine, and the powder and softerner drawer is really easy to take out and clean (second most important criteria)!

This is a 1400 speed, but you can get the 1600 which was the I originally wanted, but they didn't have, but am perfectly happy with this one.

luck with the hunting!

ChippingIn · 30/07/2010 09:37

Mogglemoo - thanks!

What was the noisy one you got rid of??

Right - off to have another look at Hotpoint....

OP posts:
alypaly · 30/07/2010 10:49

hotpoint equals Bosch..same factory

Ponders · 30/07/2010 11:02

Bosch company website doesn't mention Hotpoint... so not part of the group apparently, even if they are made in the same place.

It might be like Tesco cornflakes being produced in the Kelloggs factory

Ponders · 30/07/2010 11:03

oh, mind you it doesn't mention Siemens either!

LooL00 · 30/07/2010 13:02

We have a 11 year old hotpoint that is still fine and in the flat we rent out a 19 year old Servis which has only ever had the door catch replaced. i'd buy either brand again. The hotpoint has been moved twice and the servis once.
