How do frost-free fridge freezers do it? It's like witchcraft!

I don't understand it - my old freezer I used to have to defrost it every 6 months or so, or it would get the point where you could barely get the drawers open.

My new one was advertised as frost-free but of course I thought "advertising crap" and just assumed it would be the same.

IT'S NOT. It WORKS. It never has any frost. How? How does it do it? Every now and again it will get a bit misty and then it will just do SOMETHING in the middle of the night and fix itself.

HOW DOES IT DO IT?

lucky you, am
my fridge defrosts automatically without warning, came into the kitchen to step into a large puddle because the darn thing has defrosted over night...

Yes I have a frost free freezer, had it for over 4 years now and it is FAB!!

Apparently there are little freezer elves that come out at night to clear the ice away

a more mundane explanation

I have second manual defrost freezer - I use this for more long term stuff and the frost free for stuff that gets used up fairly quickly.

What a great question. I love these radom threads

Bouncing turtle THANK YOU!!!

I was thinking freezer elves also. Slightly disappointed to learn it's more boring than that

How interesting - so that would explain, I suppose, why the icecream was always harder in my previous freezer. Bit scared by the idea of everything slightly defrosting every night, but I guess it knows what it's doing and they must have tested it?!

When we move to our new house (DV) I am going to get a chest freezer for the cellar too. That's my (rather mundane) dream!

mousey - I can recommend my John Lewis one!

It does sometimes produce a small puddle. For ages I was blaming this on the poor cat - it was only when he died I realised that maybe he wasn't responsible!

theyoungvisiter your poor little cat.. bless it

BouncingTurtle · 26/07/2010 09:55

LOL at blaming the cat!

theyoungvisiter · 26/07/2010 21:56

I know! If only I could dig him up and apologise.

Poor little thing - how I wronged you. And all the time it was the freezer [wipes tear]
