My hoover has just gone bang and emitting a stinky burned electric smell.

I think after 12 years its finally given up.

I have no idea whats good these days.

Any advice anyone on good ones/makes or equally bad ones?

Miele. Mine is the cheapest one yet it is quiet and sucks like a trouper.

Henry is good too if you don't mind the bulk. They are very steady and reliable.

Miele, though our cleaner swore by Sebo uprights

thumbwitch · 20/07/2010 15:41

Yep, Miele here too. Love it - and it lasts for ages.

newstart2010 · 20/07/2010 15:48

i like henry

MunchMummy · 20/07/2010 16:22

I was looking at Henrys, but some reviews say they don't work on carpets, and that is all we have (apart from tiles in kitchen and bathroom).

Seems like Miele is worth looking at. Thanks

If you have mainly carpets, I would avoid Henry. It's a nice vacuum for hard floors but it's not good on carpets at all, even with the special Airobrush turbo attachment.

I have a Miele Cat and Dog cylinder and it is easily the best vacuum I have ever had (been through 3 Dysons and got a Henry as a result of all the raves but was disappointed with it really). Plus it came with a free 10 years parts or replacement guarantee.

DO NOT buy a Hoover. It is the worst household product I have EVER bought. The customer service is terrible, it broke after about 2 months, and was generally pretty useless the whole time I had it.

I have a Dyson ball now which is really good and compact to store if you have a small house. The only down side is it has quite a short hose. I also have had a Henry which was very reliable.

I am very pleased with my Dyson, which I have had for a few years now. I'm also very pleased with their customer service. Mine recently also "blew up" emitting a burny smell. I called their service engineers, and they aranged for someone to come within 3 days. They have a set service charge (£69) which covers anything which needs doing however major.

Turned out the motor had blown, so they replaced that, but also while they were at it, they replaced the brush bar and two filters (which wasn't strictly necessary) for no extra cost. They were prompt, polite, efficient, clean and tidy. I was most impressed.

OOoh I have just got this one after my Dyson gave up the ghost it's brilliant I can honestly say it's the best hoover I have ever had and we have a German Shepherd that is constantly shedding - picks up all the fur no problem. OH did a lot of research, and this one had great reviews, we have not been diappointed. Great price too.

ladysybil · 28/07/2010 11:38

Always had a dyson. on second one now, had my own for twelve years now. good customer service, good machine.

asouthwoldmummy · 30/07/2010 22:20

Mine is a Vax and the suction is brilliant! Great on all floors but quite heavy

cyanarasamba · 31/07/2010 09:02

Sorry to hijack, but I'm in the same position and considering a Miele. I've only used bagless before - can I ask how much you spend on hoover hags with one of these and how often they need changing?

bacon · 31/07/2010 10:18

I have a sebo. Because the filters are "hospital quality" the bag fills quickly. The bags are approx £8 for 10 - I usually buy them on e-bay as there are no other manufacturers of them. They are superior quality. I can change mine every 3 weeks depending.

Bagless makes no difference its all about litres per second.

I have easily meant vaccum cleaners myself - all the info is on the web. Recently the wind up mechanism went on the sebo and I sourced the part on line, took it apart and fixed it, honestly its easy. I would not justify £70.

The Which? guide recommends Miele. I did loads of research and decided on the Sebo.
