I have had a new bathroom suite and bath screen fitted after 13 years looking at a green suite and mouldy bathroom so im desperate to keep it as clean as poss.

Can i use cream cleaner/flash etc on the bath/sink/toliet or do they scratch the surface.

what cleans bath screen.

how often do i need to clean.

its been 3 days so far and i have just showered and wiped it all down after each use with water.

what do i clean tiles with, one wall is black tiles so i presume cleaners cant be used as they are white?

as you can see im useless so all tips will be helpful to me. thanks

I wouldn't use cream cleaners(like cif) on it, but flash or similar should be ok.

Someone who knows more will be along in a minute I'm sure.

But I just have to tell you how double I am that you have a new bathroom. I know I've only had my green bathroom suite for 11 years but maybe if I wait 2 more years I'll be allowed to have one too?

I use method tub and tile on mine daily, two squirts on a cloth. Lasts ages and isn't too harsh. I use parazone wipes on the toilet rim/cistern and a bit of bleach in the bowl every day. Ecover all purpose is good for tiles if doing them regularly, again very gentle and not too whiffy.

Depending how often you do it will depend on what products you need to use. Daily wiping with a damp cloth will keep scum at bay, doing it weekly or less you might need the stronger stuff.

I do polish the shower doors once a week with window cleaning spray to make them all shiny.

I use Viakal bathroom spray as I find it deals with limescale really well. It makes taps and tiles nice and shiny! But I do live in London with its extremely hard water!

I wonder if you've read about the wonder of white vinegar on here; it cleans chrome, loos (recommended by our plumber against calcareous deposits everywhere) and shower curtains. It is also VERY cheap.

i literally just cleaned my bathroom this morning. regarding your questions:

Can i use cream cleaner/flash etc on the bath/sink/toliet or do they scratch the surface - i personally use mr muscle for the bath, sink and outside of the loo and domestos bleach down the loo itself. cream should be fine for the sink and bath though. it won't be anti-bacterial so perhaps use a cleaner with a dissinfectant in it once in a while too. i wouldn't use cream down the loo mind. you'll need something more stronger like domestos or harpic.

what cleans bath screen - for my shower screens i use windolene. wipe all over and finish with a bit of vinegar to really bring a shine out.

how often do i need to clean - i clean my bathroom every week though both my loos get a hello from my domestos daily too.

what do i clean tiles with, one wall is black tiles so i presume cleaners cant be used as they are white - normal cleaners should be fine on whatever colour tiles. if its really bad try and find a product called limelite in your supermarket. green spray bottle.

i have always found that if you keep on top of your bathroom with little bits everyday like wiping down the sink and bleaching the loo then it shouldn't take too long for the big weekly clean. i always give the sink a spray and wipe and the loo and squirt of bleach when i'm watching over the LO in the bath. i also pick up any towels, etc, when i go to the loo. then on a monday when i have the house to myself i do the big bathroom clean. firstly i'll squirt the loo with the domestos and spray all the other surfaces down with the mr muscle and leave it whilst i then clear all the bottles and toys and other rubbish. then its just a matter of wiping down the bath, shower, sink and outside of the toilet. then i'll mop the floor and leave to dry before rerturning to give the loo a quick brush and flush. all in all take me about 10 minutes.

i do love having a bath or giving a bath to my LO when the bathroom is all lovely and clean and sparkling. also regular little bits here and there also mean you shouldn'nt be caught out if someone visits and needs to use the loo.

thanks, thats all very helpful, will look into white vinegar as ive never tried it.
i have been bleaching the toilet daily and wiping the rest round inc the tiles and so im hoping it will stay clean and mould free. i also have the windows wide open but in winter its hard to get air in without freezing everyone.

I am sure you will never get that white scum look on your shower screen - but just in case I have found that washing up liquid and a scrubbing brush brings it back to a real sparkle.

racingheart · 24/07/2010 10:19

Limelite green bottle as Stoif said, is brilliant if you have a build up of hard water stains on the glass. But otherwise I use window spray on shower screens and tiles (good for shiny tiles - especially black ones)

Been dying to ask all the vinegar lovers - doesn't it make your houses honk of vinegar? everyone says how brilliant it is but I'm scared of smelling like a chip shop...

just cleaned bathroom with method spray and it worked great and i feel much happier knowing dd isnt touching chemicals, thanks for the tip.
used parazone on toilet and it all looks great.
just need to get the mould off the bathmat next, its only 2 months old so im reluctant to bin it.

Racingheart - DS1 does complain about the smell while I'm cleaning, but it's gone as soon as you've rinsed.

Familyfun - afraid bleach is the only thing I know that gets rid of mould. Once clean, you need to make sure the mat is hung to dry after every use, that way mould won't develop.

It takes me 20 mins to clean my (admittedly small bathroom)

Wipe and polish mirror, spray cleaner over sink, toilet bath. Disinfect door handle, put bleach or parazone down toilet. Wipe over window, sill, radiator, sink, bath, then toilet. Scrub floor.

I do it once a week and my 5 yo bathroom looks like new. Once in a while I use vinegar to get rid of limescale deposits around taps etc.
