Cleaning crib mattress - wwyd?

OK, I know the recommendation is to replace mattresses for each child. However, DC3 (due end Aug) will be in our room in a crib attached to the bed for the first 6m (combination of sleeping in crib and co-sleeping). The crib mattress has been used for DD and DS and stored in the bedroom, so it's dry.

Would it be enough to wash the removable cover and the foam inner, dry it in the sun AND put the foam in the freezer to remove any other nasties (I've done this before with soft toys as it is reputed to kill flea eggs, etc).

Or should I buy a new crib mattress? Pg and indecisive...

How big is the crib? We just bought a new crib mattress and it was only £14 so worth it IMO.

I know, a new one would be about that. It just seems a waste. And I know why new ones are recommended, but there was a thread on here the other day about the actual risks of SIDS in relation to mattresses, and our DCs would be minimal risk - ebf, sleeping in our rooms, healthy from birth, no parental smoking/drinking/drug use, etc.

And, I'm being rather devil's advocate here, but aren't new ones full of chemicals from the manufacturng process? It's like I enjoy confusing myself .

Is a new mattress preferable to a very clean used one?

I don't think it's just about it's cleanliness. I think it's also about the support it would offer a newborn after being squished a fair bit by it's older siblings

As far as I know the link between manufacturing chemicals and SIDS was disproved, but the link between second hand matresses and SIDS (although not a huge risk) has been proved.

So for the sake of £14, personally I would (and did) by a new one.
