how can I remove black sticky bits on carpet?

My light-ish coloured carpet has got black marks on it, and I don't know how to remove them. They're from the small, felt-like pads on the base of an item, you know the ones used to cushion the base and stop it from scratching a hard floor. Well, we've just moved the box, and found that the pads have kind of disintegrated and we've now been left with sticky black bits on the carpet where it was sitting. I've tried scrubbing at it, and have tried normal detergent, but it hasn't made a difference. They're quite noticable against the colour of the carpet, and other than maybe using scissors to cut off the tops of the affected carpet tufts, I'm not sure how to remove them.

Can anyone help/suggest something to try?

I had small pieces of blu-tack ground in to DS's bedrrom carpet and couldn't get them out/off and they had blackened.

When I googled the most common suggestion was to apply some oil (sunflower oil, olive oil that kind of thing) to the mark then rub with a cloth and then scrape a little with a blunt knife. Amazingly this worked. I then just used Vanish carpet or similar after I'd removed the blu-tack.

Might be worth a try?

I would try 'sticky stuff remover' it's quite widely available now, but mine came from lakeland.

Oh as an aside, you can use the oil to remove the gum leftover from removing labels etc.

Hi Sotired..

It sounds like you've definitely got a sticky situation on your hands (no pun intended).
I had a similar situation myself not so long ago, but after exhausting myself trying to remove the hideous mark, I just ended up getting a small piece of furniture to cover it.

Have you considered using my technique? No one would ever notice the mark was there with a nice piece of furniture covering it.

Liz
