How do you dry your lettuce?

As part of my cost cutting measures I am buying whole lettuce and other green stuff (rather than prepared and pre-washed expensive stuff).

I wash it but it's still soggy after I drip dry it. I once had one of those spinner things but it was a pain in the asre to wash because of the lid (can't remember all the details now).

So does everyone serve soggy lettuce or what do they do?

The salad spinner! It's ace!

RnB · 18/07/2010 16:43

I lay it on a clean, dry tea towel

piprabbit · 18/07/2010 16:44

Put washed lettuce in a clean teatowel. Gather teatowl around lettuce making 100% you are holding it tightly.
Open back door and swing teatowel with a sharp flicking motion. All the water will spatter out. It's very satisfying.

My mum used to put it in a clean tea towel, wrap it up and swing it round her head a few times and the water goes into the tea towel.

I use my trusty Habitat salad spinner which I have had for about 20 years. I don't wash it up all that often, either, just rinse in hot water and leave on the drainer to dry.

As Piprabbit says. I used to have a salad spinner but wanted to regain some cupboard space so I got rid of it.

DuelingFanjo · 18/07/2010 17:01

shake it, eat it.

Nemofish · 18/07/2010 22:51

That's a very personal question.

SpeedyGonzalez · 18/07/2010 22:54

I get a clean, dry, fluffy bathtowel (scented with Ecover fabric conditioner, bien sur), and then press it lightly against both sides of each lettuce leaf. Takes ages, but I think you'll agree the effect is most pleasing.

Tortoise · 18/07/2010 22:54

At the moment, i put it in a sieve, find a saucepan lid closest to the size of the sieve, then shake it!

What i really want is a salad spinner!

OK so tea towels rule. Might as well use them for something I suppose as I don't dry dishes with them.

Used to use a clean tea towel but finally caved in and bought a Lakeland salad spinner.

It is just fabulous - has a brake on it and everything.

snugglejunkie · 19/07/2010 07:30

@ Nemofish

and at DuelingFanjo's post above it

Nemofish · 19/07/2010 17:42

Could Lakeland manufacture a specialist lettuce towel?

MimieD · 19/07/2010 18:08

I second the salad spinner BeenBeta has...it's great

CantStopEatingCheese · 20/07/2010 22:31

I love my salad spinner! I have this one: www.lakeland.co.uk/F/product/2623_7621
though sadly not with clear lid (what a brilliant idea!) Got the mini because of cupboard space shortage but aspire to the larger one! Currently I have to dry my lettuce in batches...

Chatelaine · 21/07/2010 15:42

piprabbit - generations of our family have used this tea towel method and we even have a name for it, "flinking" agree that it is very satisfying, you can even chase someone whilst doing it, (small children love it) and it saves on cupboard space {smile)

clemetteattlee · 21/07/2010 15:44

Salad spinners are £6 in Sainsbury's at the moment. Spiunning the lettuce is DD's job

clemetteattlee · 21/07/2010 15:44

Spinning

DominicsMum · 21/07/2010 18:34

Try Ikea for salad spinners - got one a few weeks ago -think it was only £3ish. Brilliant

sparkle1977 · 29/07/2010 16:22

I don't wash lettuce, or any other fruit and veg for that matter, unless I spot any visible dirt/bugs etc

SparkyToo · 29/07/2010 17:03

Throw it in a clean towel. Used to have one of those spinners and they are brilliant. Not sure what happened to it!

ChippingIn · 29/07/2010 18:39

Paper towel, a couple of pieces, put it in there, roll, shake it about, lovely dry lettuce and lovely damp paper towel for wiping your fingers on while preparing the rest of dinner

Mooos · 30/07/2010 04:18

yeuch Sparkle 77 - what about all the pesticides and poisons (and people with dirty hands that picked it..and sneezed on it when they were picking it..and then went to the loo..okay I'll stop now)

Germs germs germs.
