We suddenly have an ant colony in our patio garden. DD doesn't want to play outside any more because they keep going up her legs. What's the best way to get rid of them?

We have an ant problem (not just on the patio - they make forays into the house as well). The only thing that works is Nippon ant killer, I think they take it back to the nest and share it with their friends.
It doesn't cure the problem but has made it bearable.

We put the poison inside big containers (butter tub or similar) with tiny holes for the ants to access. The tubs go out once DCs have finished playing outside and then I collect them before they go out and play the next day.

A good natural way is to put down old lemon peels; it takes a while to work but ants hate the smell of rotten lemons and they won't go where they are.

We tried everything and nothing worked. We are tormented by ants. Or we were. We live on sand near the beach so they love it here. Don't mind them outside, but I am not having them inside. We used Ant Stop ant bait. You can get a spray too but this is more efficient. Fantastic. Quick. Will never use anything else again. We open up the plastic container and put it under an upturned plant pot which is slightly raised. They take the bait back to the nest and it kills them all. From usual places: Homebase, Wilkinsons etc. We put one in the front garden and one in the bakc next to the house. We make sure it's kept away from our dogs. Fantastic creatures but we used to have thousands indoors which would crawl up your arms when you got squash out of the cupboard. You'll have to do it once a year.
