Housing Medical Priority

Hello, I'm wondering if anyone has any idea about medical priority with housing. I am currently in a hostel (temporary accommodation) with my toddler. I have an older son who won't stay here which is very upsetting. My mental health worker has contacted the council to say I am diagnosed with psychosis, anxiety and bpd. She said my medication is under urgent review due to how bad I have been feeling. (Thoughts of ending life). She also put a lot about my ex who is abusive, although I doubt that will help. What do you think my chances are of getting higher priority? I'm going out of my mind here.

Diffrent areas have different rules, I live S/E and think you'd go in band B. How old is older son and is their a reason he won't stay?

Just to add you can only be offered what is available, so if you want a 2/3 bed house/bungalow or ground floor flat the wait will be longer than a 2nd floor flat with no lift

Where is your older son staying and does he have plans to return once you have your own place?
how old is he? As you may only be eligible for a 2 bed place, based on 2 kids sharing? If he doesn’t have his own room would he still return?
it’s not nice to see families split because of accommodation but they will look at everything
History of DV usually helps too. I’d say they look at it more than anxiety for example.
what are you currently handed and how long have you been in temp accommodation? What reasons for being in temp too? They look at a much bigger picture than just medical to assess need.

I was in a b and b for 6 weeks and have been in a hostel for nearly 4 months. My 11 year old is staying with his dad now. I was made homeless when I got a section 21 in my private rent. I don't work due to mental health so can't afford current rent prices and no one wants to rent to a non worker anyway. I'm currently band 3 for being homeless but I'm coming up at 120 on the waiting list for a property. Plus I've looked at who previous properties have been let to and it's only band 1 or 2 which you can only get through medical priority or overcrowding. I have a 19 year old and him and his gf are at uni so will be staying with me 5 months a year. But they don't class it as overcrowded as it's not full time. Although they'll be 3 adults and a toddler in a one room hostel!

He's 11 and has autism. He can't handle being in the little room with his toddler brother or sharing a bathroom with other families. I live on the isle of wight and am band 3 for being homeless but you don't get housed here unless you're band 1 or 2, which is only for medical priority or severe overcrowding. This is why I'm hoping to get medical priority. But because I've had mental illness for years I don't know if they will disregard it. It's certainly made worse by my housing situation but it can also easily be made worse by other life situations.

Does your toddler have a dad they can go and stay with until you’re housed?

Macbarbie21 · 16/11/2025 08:09

No, as he works full time. But he's quite happy at the hostel with me anyway.

So he’s fine with his DC being in a hostel, what a great dad. A hostel is no place for a child.
