How long does it take to win a council house on band A?

Hello, I’ve just been put on band A for medical reasons after 2 years of fighting with the council :) but I just wanted to know how long will it take before I win a house? And how long do I have to move mine and my childrens stuff in from my flat to the new house?

Thank you

Impossible to answer! It will vary immensely by area. Where I live its up to 2 years approximately now for Band A. Other places like London will be much more.
Your local housing authority will have information on the website about likely waiting times - and different times for different areas/types of housing.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 06/08/2022 18:30

There is no way of anyone on mumsnet knowing. Different areas have a different amounts of people waiting.
Maybe ring and ask your local council on Monday.
Also just a personal point. Saying "win" a house is a bit 😕.
How long will it take to have a successful bid is less goady.

As for moving in you will be invited to sign and pay a first month's rent upfront (or if you are on housing benefits this may not be necessary) and sign your rental agreement. You will receive the key the same day. If you are currently renting there may be some crossover of your current rent and your new council home.

We moved to a bungalow, it took about 18 months from going on the list to moving in as we were deemed as priority. We had to wait for a suitable disabled friendly bungalow. We had a couple of weeks notice but only a couple of days to actually move before handing in keys to previous place.

Thank you everyone. I will ring my housing officer on Monday and hopefully she knows the information 😀

Just a personal point - when you bid on something and win it on eBay do you say that you’ve had a successful bid on eBay? Or like everyone else on this earth do you say you’ve won it? Or if you’ve won the lottery do you say you’ve won the lottery or you was successful on the lottery?

Because like everyone in my position I am literally bidding on a house hoping to WIN it.

I really shouldn’t be giving my attention to your silly comment but I am truly in shock that someone got offended by the word WIN 🤣

So in future please keep your personal, ridiculously pointless thought to yourself or even better if the word WINS offends you so much just don’t comment. Thank you.

I wouldn't say I've won something on eBay. I'd say I'd bought something on eBay. You haven't won it, you've paid money for it and bought it.

Sux2buthen · 06/08/2022 22:49

@QuillBill you win it in auction after bidding. Like these houses
Good luck op

Redshoeblueshoe · 06/08/2022 22:50

Maybe post on the local board because people will have a better idea of what it's like in your area. Or try your local Facebook page. Good luck

MichelleScarn · 06/08/2022 22:51

You 'win' the lottery because its a lottery
You get the ebay item as you offered the most money.
You get the council house as you met the criteria?
Your response to @ForTheLoveOfSleep is bizarre!

This is an Internet forum, you can't decide who posts. And she posted some helpful information too.

But she is asking if people would say they had won something on eBay and I'm saying 'no'.

I would say I was the highest bidder.

exnewwifeproblems · 06/08/2022 23:02

You don't "win" a council house.

You are awarded it. You are given it.

But you do not "win" it.

Apart from anything else, you have to pay for it going forward - either yourself from your own resources or via benefits awarded to you by the state.

daisyjgrey · 06/08/2022 23:03

I buy things from eBay. I'd win the lottery.

At work we say "your bid for the property was successful/unsuccessful". No winning or losing.

MockneyReject · 06/08/2022 23:04

When you are the successful bidder, having offered the most money, eBay sent you a message congratulating you on being the winning bidder. On winning the item. Of course, what you've actually won is the opportunity to purchase the item.
Similarly, when bidding for a house, you are in competition with the other bidders.

MomwasCasual · 06/08/2022 23:11

Absolutely no judgement, couldn't give a stuff, but I'd say you:

Win the lottery
Buy on eBay
Get given a council house.

Sux2buthen · 06/08/2022 23:18

The email I get from eBay after a successful bid us 'you won!'
Anyway who cares how OP describes it, this isn't pedants corner.
Sounds like you could really do with this OP, I hope you don't wait too long

To win your homeGrin

BiscoffSundae · 06/08/2022 23:20

Depends where you live, my area you don’t get band A for medical that would be band b so everywhere is different
