Rehousing request by social services

Hiya, I like in a 3-bed property I have 4 children. One of my children has additional needs so need his own room. Cut a long story short, my social worker has asked that our family be moved to a bigger property due to me co-sleeping with my two young babies due to the dangers co-sleeping pose. Sleeping in the living room is not an option in this instance. She has asked if this be dealt with as a matter of urgency.

How long would you think it would take for me to be offered a 4-bed house if there were properties available and would this be a managed move?

Sad to say this is a classic example of social workers not being realistic. People who are overcrowded all live and sleep in less than ideal places. 4 beds are in very high demand so I think you may he waiting a long time unless you are in a very low demand area.

Mayvis · 08/08/2022 20:32

It will depend on your area but 4 bed houses are like gold dust here and you’d be waiting many years even with a referral.

Can the babies share a room and then one child come in with you? Not the child who needs their own room.

Or have 3 share the biggest room.

If you're in London or the SE it will probably be 5+ years.

There are no houses. Women and children fleeing abuse cannot be housed, they're living in bedsits and hostels for up to a year.

A family member of mine has had social services referring them to the council as they need an accessible property. They have no downstairs bathroom and cannot use the stairs or a stairlift so they're having to use a portable commode. Locally it could still be 2-4 years.

What context is this in, are the children on a CHIN plan or CP plan or in care proceedings?

MichelleScarn · 08/08/2022 20:41

How old are the youngest 2? You're really down to 2 beds for 1 adult 3 kids? Could the 3 have the biggest room with 1 set bunk beds and another high bed with room under this for Storage?

GetOffTheRoof · 08/08/2022 20:48

What band have you been given for your need? Are you bidding on properties yet?

Ylvamoon · 08/08/2022 20:50

How big are the bedrooms and what is the age and sex of all 4 children?
Is it possible for 3 of the children to share?
Or can you share with one of the children (separate beds)?
Or can the biggest room be divided into two?
I think if you are in an area with lots of new build estates popping up, you might be lucky enough to get your house sooner rather than later.

CornishTiger · 08/08/2022 20:53

It would have to go to the welfare panel and you’d go back on the housing register here. They would decide if sufficient to award 4 beds. This wouldn’t met the managed move criteria in most housing associations.

Gracerosario · 08/08/2022 22:24

My eldest son is almost 17 and he is in a bedroom measuring at 5.04m2. My other son aged 12 with additional needs is in a room
measured at 6.89m2. Both rooms are very small in size. My two babies girl aged 9 months boy aged 2 years co- sleep with me as even my room is of small size being a newly built property it has an en-suite and fitter closet so that has taken up most of the space. We’ve have a few new build properties popping up over the coming year so I am hoping one will be given to us.

My eldest is 17 almost and wouldn’t share with me in my bed. My room wouldn’t fit another bed in. And my child with behaviours I wouldn’t share with him as he has sleep disturbances and adhd and can be up all night so that’s a definite no

CornishTiger · 08/08/2022 22:27

You qualify for a 4 bed. However you need to apply to go back on the housing register to get one.

its not a managed move case. You have intentionally overcrowded yourself by bedroom size ( not to be confused with statutory overcrowding). It’s not something for your landlord to resolve as a priority. Around here I have only seen 3 4beds in last year advertised

Beachsidesunset · 08/08/2022 22:28

I think you need to lower your expectations and prepare for a long wait. Your eldest is likely to turn 18 and be expected to house himself, before you're offered a 4-bed, making your 3-bed acceptable. Sorry to be negative.

Gracerosario · 08/08/2022 22:29

No because the biggest of rooms measure at 6.84m2 there no space for two separate beds. My challenging child has that room and refuses to give it up as it has been fitted with his lights, sensory bits. Whilst my eldest has the smallest
of room measuring at 5.04m2.

No it’s not negative at all. That’s for your feedback :)

Co sleeping isn't dangerous if done safely following safe sleep guidelines

pannikin · 08/08/2022 22:31

Sorry the link didn't work. Idk how to link in the app but if you google 'safe co sleeping guidelines' it's on the lullaby trust website

Gracerosario · 08/08/2022 22:32

Thanks for the feedback :) I sent all my documents and supporting letters over for the housing to have a look at. X

I will do, it’s the SS and GP that’s against it but we’ll see. Thanks for the help x

Can social help with getting bigger property if they are trying to put a child jn your card

TheRedEngine · 11/02/2024 10:52

I suppose it’s worth asking what you thought was going to happen before you had these children? No doubt you’d thought about it in advance and had made plans?

Those of us who have to pay for our own housing tend to plan in advance.

I'd start a fresh thread if I were you, the issues are very different here plus this is a very old thread.

Hi, I have been waiting 20 years in temporary accommodation to be housed in permanent house, I am a single mum to 3 children 2 whom have autism. I was in a dv marriage and manage to get out of that 8 years ago. My current temporary accommodation lease has expired and I need to be out in 2 weeks, I have gotten the solicitor involved and the council have made a direct offer for a permanent home to me as a discharge of duty. The property they have offered me is suitable for myself and my children the only issue is it’s in the area where my ex in laws live. I haven’t had any contact with them in years and I avoided bidding for a property in that area. I am really panicking as they were really nasty towards me as I had to get the police involved with my ex. I have been told I need to accept the property and I have 21 days to ask for a review . Can anyone advise me please, thank you.

Start a fresh thread of your own, this one isn't relevant to your questions and won't get the answers you want.
