Did you mean to copy and paste something else?

Juicyapple44 · 28/05/2026 22:49

To pass GCSE English you need a grade 4 or above, I have never heard of upper level 2 , if you mean grade 2 then no that is not a pass.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/05/2026 22:55

I think @arun100means the higher end of the grade 2 bracket.

I’m afraid you need a grade 4 to pass @arun100.

HaveYourPetSpayedOrNeutered · 29/05/2026 06:35

When do you sir your exams @arun100?

RobertBobsee · 29/05/2026 07:09

Talk to your teacher. They can point out specifically in your work what you need to finesse to increase your level from a 2 up to a 3. I don't think an upper level 2 response is high enough to get you the grade 4 you need to pass.

You are showing a solid understanding of the text but need to tweak your responses for a more detailed answer, more analytical, unpick the text a bit more. Why does the character do that, why did the author choose that, that sort of thing.

To everyone else there are several levels in each Assessment Objective and depending on the answer given it falls within certain levels. My children's work would come back with sections underlined and "AO2 level 4" or "AO3 level 5" in the margins. That was English Lit, I can't remember how many levels there are for English Lang but @arun100 this is all helpfully listed out in the mark scheme in the past papers, all of which are available online for whatever exam board you are sitting.

arun100 · 29/05/2026 10:27

i mean i checked my answer with an edexcel mark scheme and it matched with level 2- level 3 as an answer which was for question 3 paper 2 which went to 4-6 marks to 7-9 marks out of 12 for english language

You can see grade boundaries from previous years gcses - search for the exam board and you should find a spreadsheet of marks for each subject and what grades they would give you. You can then work out approx what grade you are on target for. I think posters are misunderstanding and the op is referring to levels in the mark scheme not the final GCSE grades.

Juicyapple44 · 29/05/2026 14:35

Ok so I understand what you are saying now, I have found a mark scheme on line possible different paper to the one you are looking at paper 2 question 3 was worth 15 marks with level 2 only being worth between 4-6 marks and a comment saying The mark awarded cannot progress beyond the top of
Level 2 if only language OR structure has been considered.
if you are only getting 4-6 marks out of a possible 12 you are not answering the question with enough detail etc as the one I was looking at the more detail, references and how it relates and explanations etc got awarded the top marks

i did my maths gcse foundation edexcel papers i feel i have gotten 47,50 48 marks alone with what i have got right i didnt add method marks, is this a pass

So that would mean it was an upper grade 2 answer, you need a grade 4 or above to pass. So no it's not a "passing answer".

However if you mean could you get a not "passing answer" on one question and not actually fail the paper, yes you could. So if you were getting 4-6 marks out of 12 for one short answer, but higher marks on other questions, you could still pass overall.

What do you call it when the answer to a question is in the question itself?

i have just sat my final gcse paper 3 exam, as i sat each paper in the last few minutes i added the marks on what i think i got right and it got to approximately 47/80 paper 1, 50/80 paper 2, 48/80 paper 3, therefore these marks are not including method marks, this is my retake as im stuck at a grade 3 and just need a boost to a grade 4.

So were they 3 different papers - i.e.
paper 1 - score 47
paper 2 - score 50
paper 3 - score 48
Of ONE exam season (even if taken separately) which would give you a final score of 150 out of 420 which would be a grade 4.

I think this is what you mean. Otherwise you mean overall you got 47/240, then had another try and got 50/240 and then tried again getting 48/240 which would be a high grade 1.
