10 yo presentation homework

My DS has been given homework of putting together an individual talk about an animal of their choice. They did some work on it in class and DS came home telling me he was finished. Part of the point of this is to practice their presentation skills so I asked him to present it to me and while his presentation skills are ok for a 10yo, the content was really really crap imo…😬 it was just so basic it’s something I would have expected from a 7yo maybe?

He’s from all accounts a bright kid who is doing well in class, teacher always giving us glowing feedback about him, but I’ve never seen him do a presentation that’s an individual thing before and I’m wondering if my expectations are way too high or if this is something he really needs to work on? So can you tell me what should I expect? What would you think would be the level of info expected from a 10yo for a class presentation on an animal? I just feel he did barely any research…

I guess their size/appearance/features, habitat, and diet, plenty of relevant facts, some terminology, and the info. arranged into a logical order with a clear introduction not repeating or contradicting.

DS has just turned 11 (y6) and wrote on the class blog a few months ago which his teacher gushed over. (The other kids' work on the blog is just as shit or worse.) It was just nonsense pasted from Wikipedia that he clearly hadn't even fully understood (and the teacher hadn't read.) We were horrified and disappointed. We were just saying last night how we feel DS' level is quite basic despite all the high grades and praise he gets from school.

@Jeannne92 thanks for responding! That's interesting that you say about cut and paste from Wikipedia as I think DS would happily do the same and I've basically told him to avoid Wikipedia as much as possible as while it has its uses it's not alway a reliable source. He did a presentation back a few years about a castle and literally cut and paste info from the visitor website (so at least going to credible source) but like you say he didn't even vaguely understand what he'd pasted! 🤦‍♀️
At the moment the presentation repeats itself and has barely anything in it that you need to research, it's basic info that you can deduce for yourself from looking at a picture and maybe a tiny bit more (he's found out the oldest recorded one for example) initially he didn't even say where they lived (it's elephants by the way) but has added that after I asked. I'm just gobsmacked he thought he was finished...😬
