Can anybody explain how the answer to the last question is 4. Trying to help with my daughters homework and she swears she hasn’t been taught this.

What year is this??

ScottishAngel · 11/12/2022 14:51

I think the answer is 4.

If CD are both fractions then the top number of the fractions can only be 1 and 7. The bottom of the fractions must be factors of 27 so 1,3, 9, 27. This gives the possible combinations of CD as
1/1 x 7/27
7/1 x 1/27

1/9 x 7/3
7/9 x 1/3

Thank you so much! That makes perfect sense. She’s 12 in year 8. Last thing we are stuck on is attached. I can’t find any cgp maths book with help on how to figure this out either.

Oh god bloody MyMaths, I hate it so much.

Lazy lazy homework that doesn't help for so many maths topics - utterly demotivating if you get most of the way towards an answer but make a small error (and no way for the teacher to see that). Useful for the odd bit of maths but old fashioned worksheets so much better

TeenDivided · 11/12/2022 15:06

a= 1/5, b= 1/4

1/5 divided by 1/4 = 1/5 x 4/1 = 4/5

Also

3/5 divided by 3/4 = 3/5 x 4/3 = 12/15 = 4/5

2/5 divided by 1/2 = 2/5 x 2/1 = 4/5

I am a 54 year old designer and I know that in the real world half of the work she brings home is such a waste of time. She wants to travel the world and somehow help the poor. She doesn’t need to waste her time on learning about fossils in the ground or the earths core, learning the periodic table I just don’t understand why when she’s so clever she needs to stress her mind with all this when she could learn so much more on the topics she’s interested in.

When you divide by fraction you change the second fraction upside down and then multiply i.e 1/5 divided by 1/4 is the same as 1/5 * 4/1.

Therefore suitable pairs are:

A = 1/5 B= 4/1
A=4/1B=5/1
A= 2/1 B =5/2
A= 2/5 B=2/1

The thing is many y8s know exactly what they want to do, and by y11, or y13, or end uni they have completely changed their mind.
This is why they need a broad education at GCSE, so they can be flexible later.

TeenDivided · 11/12/2022 15:18

3/7 divided by 15/28

In fact many fractions made of 2 primes that aren't 2 or 5 that aren't too close together.

so 11/19 divided by 55/76

Your 'b's need to be the other way up for the answer in the first line.

I wouldn't personally consider 2/1 nor 4/1 to be a fraction in it' lowest form, and 5/2 definitely isn't.

TeenDivided · 11/12/2022 15:23

Well 5/2 could be 'simplist form' but it's improper / vulgar (dependent on your age) so seems iffy to me for this question.

She needs to do maths and learn a great deal of other topics.

Maths teaches you to think logically, to approach problems from different angles, to establish your known facts and determine a logical path toward an outcome.

She needs to get a lot of practice in in fractions before she gets into algebra.

She's not going to help the poor if she doesn't know anything though is she?

The periodic table is basic knowledge for chemistry which is the fundamental building block for sciences. Basic maths ability is needed for so many things, from science to business, to carpentry, measuring animal foods etc.
