Could someone please help me explain to my ten year old how to solve this question?

a car journey averages 8 mph. The distance is 1.6 miles. How long does the journey take?

thanks.

Do you mean he has the formulas but doesn't understand how they work? I found this online ( just Google Time Distance Speed images) it might help

Does he know that speed = distance / time
So time = distance/speed ?

Ask your child what speed a car goes at. They'll probably say 30 miles per hour. Explain that that means 30 miles in 1 hour or 60 mins. What if they only travelled 15 miles? How long would that take? What about 60 miles?

Then say that you can work out the time taken if you know the distance travelled and the speed. If you travel at 8mph how many miles do you do in 60 mins? (8). But you're only travelling 1.6miles so it's going to take you less than an hour. Will it take half an hour? (They should be able to work out that it'll take less than that). How far in 15 mins? They should start to see a bit of a pattern. Depending how the school teaches it you can then give the equations linked to above and substitute the values. Some schools just get them to write it as a fraction and never really talk about the exact formula. So 1.6/8 is the same as ?/60. The ? will give you the time taken if they know how to work out equivalent fractions.

Thanks for the responses. They do know the formula, but it was more of a question of whether there is a simple way to make this calculation.
This obviously is not my strong point! 🤦‍♀️

Is it worth remembering that 1.6 is 1/10th of 16 and that's twice 8?

If you need to do it as mental arithmetic that would probably help.
