Changing the smell of a house!

Movealong14 · 18/06/2022 18:25

How to do this? Lived in my house for 2 months and it still smells of the previous owners.
I have carpet cleaned right through, thrown all curtains away etc
any ideas?

Any wallpaper in there?

MsOllie · 18/06/2022 18:26

Comes with time from the washing powder you use down to what you cook etc
Reed diffusers, scented candles, open windows every day

ApolloandDaphne · 18/06/2022 18:26

Redecorate?

SnotsGotTheBoobies · 18/06/2022 18:30

I get a room deodoriser from rozone, it’s orchid scented. But it smells like baby shampoo, and it lasts a long time. Just spray it on all your soft furnishings, and your house will smell divine! I’ll see if I can get a link for it……

glamourousindierockandroll · 18/06/2022 18:34

I think it will take time too. Windows in all rooms opened every day. Continue using your preferred cleaning and laundry products.

If it's a particularly unpleasant smell, you may need to repaint to give it a reset

Following. I'm pregnant and we're in a rental, and it stinks. It makes me feel ill 🤢 it's not even of anything in particular. We're living with the windows open but I've got hayfever too so that's not helpful for me! My husband can't smell anything which is infuriating when it's so strong to me!

I know I'll struggle with strong scented air fresheners too, I can't wear my own perfume at the moment !

its pretty expensive, but lasts a long time in a house setting. I use this on my cleaning jobs, as sometimes the smells in there are vile! But it completely neutralises them, and once the properties are cleaned, it’s so much easier to sign them off when they smell good!
I spray it on any hard floors or carpets, curtains, soft furnishings etc.

MattDamon · 18/06/2022 18:36

We had to wash down all the walls with soapy water. We were repainting anyway so didn't mind if it mucked up the paint. The smell went immediately.

Annonnimoouse42 · 18/06/2022 18:53

we've had an offer accepted on a house that really strongly smells of cigarette smoking, so thank you for this advice

Mellowyellow222 · 18/06/2022 18:58

It took about six months for my house.

carpets cleaned twice.

the smell changed when I got the bathroom and en-suite ripped out. I think there was a damp undertone🤮

I'd be really cautious about this, anon. Cigarette smells are incredibly difficult to eliminate. Any carpets and underlay will definitely have to go, and even repainting the walls may not be enough - you may have to have them sealed first.

My idiot DH got a good deal on a second hand car that reeked of cigarettes. Three and a half years and much futile cleaning later, it still smells like a dodgy old taxi.

Can I ask what sort of spray bottle you use - just a regular water spray type bottle?
Do you need to dilute it?

Been in my house two years and it took until I had redecorated and replaced all the carpets before it lost its previous owners smell.

resuwen · 18/06/2022 19:39

Price's Open Window candles

BertieBotts · 18/06/2022 19:42

Can you identify what the smell is? Cooking, smoke, damp?

Have you replaced the filter in the cooker hood if there is one? Washed walls and ceilings with sugar soap? Checked bathroom flooring?

mathanxiety · 18/06/2022 20:02

Take out the carpets.

mathanxiety · 18/06/2022 20:04

And YYY to washing all of your walls. Do the ceilings too. You can buy proper wall washing detergent from hardware/ paint shops.

Movealong14 · 19/06/2022 07:45

Thanks all! The smell is of let’s say the older generation… also they had a cat which I get a whiff of every now again. Good idea for sugar soap I’ll try that!

OP posts:
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/06/2022 07:48

You need enzyme spray in that case.

mathanxiety · 20/06/2022 01:05

YYY to enzyme spray if there's a whiff of cat. Buy it in pet supply shops. It smells a bit when it's applied but it fades. It would help if you knew where the cat smell is coming from or you'll go through a lot of enzyme spray.

Could you get the carpets deep cleaned by a professional carpet cleaner?

Workinghardeveryday · 20/06/2022 06:57

Can you not cherry bomb it like you can a car?

that works amazing on cars…

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/06/2022 07:02

If you're near a Wilkos in the UK them they do a good pet odour spray for a couple of quid, smells lovely and fresh, apart on until it's wet and leave to dry out.

Movealong14 · 20/06/2022 09:07

Thanks for the recommendations! The enzyme spray is that for carpet or walls or both?
I’ve already had the carpets professionally cleaned so I don’t know where the smell could be coming from!
