Hello,
This is my Dd's maths work and she has been really struggling. I have asked my sister to help her, however, it will be in a few days and now I'm genuinely curious as to what the answers are. Would love to find out!
If any of you know would really appreciate itGrin

Literally a quick google search 'convert 1cm to m'

dementedpixie · 22/03/2021 17:25

First 2 you are multiplying to find the answer
2nd 2 you are dividing to find the answer

dementedpixie · 22/03/2021 17:27

So 5 x 13
15 x 7.7
174 ÷ 6
264 ÷ 48

Springingintospring · 22/03/2021 17:28

She needs to scale the measurements according to the scale factor.
Eg the first one is 1 cm to 5 m so she needs to multiply the model length by 5.

newchiswickmum · 22/03/2021 17:28

@dementedpixie

So 5 x 13 15 x 7.7 174 ÷ 6 264 ÷ 48
Oh ok thanks!!Grin

Do you mind me asking, what year is your DD in, to have that homework?

GU24Mum · 22/03/2021 17:28

So for the first one, the scale is 1 cm to 5 m.

You know that the model is 13 cm so you multiply that by 5 (1 to 5) and then change it from cm (the model) to m (the actual thing)

13 x 5 = 65
65m

And do the same either that way round or in reverse if you're given the actual size. Each one is a different scale so a different multiplier.

Year 9 I know it seems easy to a lot of people but she is struggling with maths and we have just moved from a different country.

Scale factors are tricky to get your head around.
I suggest looking at a map together and find the scale which might be something like 1 cm on the map is 100 metres in real life.
Practise measuring distance with a ruler eg post office to school is 5 cm, times by 100 and change units to metres to get the real life distance (500m). This might help her get the idea in her head a bit more.

Not at all. We’re also abroad, so it’s useful to me to be able to keep track of what the levels are like in the U.K. Thank you!

We use Emile Education atm with our daughter for maths. It is provided by the school though, however I think they are bringing out a app for outside school too :)
